9-1-1 Season 9 left fans worried about Athena Grant’s fate ever since she went on a space mission. Considering that the series recently killed its lead character, Robert "Bobby" Nash, audiences were scared that his wife, Athena, might also follow suit.

Various promos showcased the LAPD patrol sergeant drifting into space after getting out of the ISS. For a moment, the character also decided to let everything go and die a heroic death. So does Athena die on 9-1-1?

The answer is no. Fortunately, Athena survives the dangerous space mission and returns home safely in Season 9. Keep reading to find out how the character’s fate was left hanging in the balance for a long time in the show.

Athena’s fate in 9-1-1

In 9-1-1 Season 9, Athena decides to join Hen on a space mission. When Hen got the opportunity after saving the life of a space company’s CEO, she asked Athena to join her to divert her mind from the tragic loss of her husband, Bobby.

While the two were expecting a new experience in life, the mission soon turned risky as the team got stuck in space. From issues in the ISS and escape pod to space debris, the crew members had a hard time dealing with various troubles.

In 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 4, the team needed someone to repair part of the International Space Station, and Athena decided to go instead of Hen. She felt she had already lost too much and did not want Hen to risk her life.

Athena thought she had nothing to lose now as her husband was no more and her children were all grown up. Hen, on the other hand, had a wife and young kids to look after. Hence, she moved out of the station, but things started to fall apart soon. Athena’s tether got stuck, and she unclipped herself to finish the job.

As she drifted into space, she started thinking about her life. She saw her younger self, back when she was a rookie cop, and remembered the time her partner was killed during a robbery. In the vision, her younger self told her to stop fighting and let go, but soon Athena realized that both pain and joy are a part of life.

The realization gave Athena the strength to keep going. Hen and the others then used a robotic arm to pull her back to safety. Hence, Athena survived the mission, and the escape pod made it back to Earth safely, marking the end of the space mission arc in 9-1-1 Season 9. She eventually reunited with her children, May and Harry.

Angela Bassett did not know Athena’s fate for a long time

Angela Bassett, who plays Athena, did not know about the outcome of the space mission in 9-1-1 for a long time. In an interview with Variety, Aisha Hinds, who plays Hen, revealed that she and her co-star were not initially informed whether they would make it out of the mission alive. Hinds said:

“Listen, no one’s safe at any moment; we know that…We didn’t know our next move until we were deep into this move — which was also what added to the adventure of it all.”

Apart from Hinds and Bassett, the series stars Oliver Stark as Evan "Buck" Buckley, Ryan Guzman as Edmundo "Eddie" Díaz, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley, Kenneth Choi as Howard "Chimney" Han, Corinne Massiah as May Grant, Elijah M. Cooper as Harry Grant, and Gavin McHugh as Christopher "Chris" Díaz.

9-1-1 Season 9 airs new episodes on ABC on Thursdays.
