Taylor Sheridan's Landman took a surprising and tragic turn for Cooper Norris in episode 5 after he was beaten to a pulp and left to die by Manuel and Antonio.

While his fellow crew members warned him twice about his closeness to Ariana (their cousin's widow), the couple grew closer with each episode, and Ariana finally kissed Cooper in front of Manuel and Antonio, which was their final straw.

This act drove them to the edge, and they brutally beat Cooper in episode 5, with the character's fate hanging in the balance by the end of the episode. While Cooper sustained injuries, he is not dead in Landman.

Jacob Lofland will also reprise his character in season 2, as he confirmed with TV Insider:

"I think I can say that without spoiling. Yes, we’re still in there. We’re still here."

More on this in our story.

Does Cooper die in Landman? Exploring the character's fate after Episode 5

Cooper is surely one of the most interesting characters in Landman, serving as a bridge between Tommy's personal and professional lives. While Cooper is an up-and-coming character who wants to enter the oil business, the tragedy in episode 1 directly affects him, setting up his arc in the show.

While Cooper survived the explosion in episode 1, it resulted in the death of all of his crew members. This incident made him a direct target for Antonio and Manuel, one of the deceased crew members' cousins.

Since Cooper was overcome with survivor's guilt in Landman, he started spending time with Ariana, the widow of the deceased crew member. However, this did not sit right with Antonio and Manuel, who even warned Cooper not to get close to their brother's widow.

After Ariana especially calls Cooper and asks for his help in Landman Episode 3, he cannot stop himself. While he just helped the woman sort out her bills and insurance money, Manuel and Antonio looked at it the wrong way and warned him again.

However, after Ariana kissed Cooper in front of Manuel and Antonio, they returned later that night and beat Cooper to a pulp outside his trailer. In episode 5, Cooper's condition is bad and it looks like he will not survive the beating. While he was unconscious for quite some time and suffered many injuries and fractures, he was alive in season 1.

Jacob Lofland reveals what's next for his character in Landman

In an interview with ScreenRant, actor Jacob Lofland revealed how Cooper's character can take a different direction in Landman Season 2:

"There'll definitely be a path change for the direction — maybe not the direction he's going. He's still going to have the same go, but there's going to be some shortcuts, or long roads to get there now. It's not going to be the straight path that it was before, it kind of changes the dynamic of what he wants to do.''

He added:

''So, there'll be some hurdles there for him. As far as the family, it would be just like if it happened to your family. It's definitely going to take a hit. But at the end of the day, I think everything's going to work out."

After Cooper's brush with death, things might look good for the character in season 2. Since he planned to move forward in the oil business with Ariana in the season 1 finale, this could be the new direction for the character in the next chapter.

In addition to Tommy, it would be interesting to see how Cooper makes a name for himself and likely takes revenge on Antonio and Manuel in season 2.
