Does Janalice reunite with her mother at the end of Rivers of Fate? Details explored

The Brazilian Netflix series, Rivers of Fate, premiered on August 20, 2025. The four-part series narrates the horrifying tale of a teenager named Janalice, who is doswoned by her parents and later gets kidnapped by s*x traffickers. Later, to save her and take her back home, her godfather, Amadeu, and a vengeful mother, Mariangel, begin their journey.

The violence-filled drama series also depicted the worst sides of human beings, as most of the people who came into Janalice’s life brought more difficulties for her. However, Amedeu and, later, Mariangel, successfully fought for the freedom of the teenage girl and took her back to her home.

However, at the last moment, Janalice decided that she would rather live with Mariangel than her own mother, Lizete, who had disowned her.

Rivers of Fate: Mariangel’s rescue operation for Janalice

At the beginning of Rivers of Fate, Janalice is sent to a relative’s house after her parents disown her due to her leaked explicit video going viral. The struggles of Janalice begin as her relative’s husband, Ramiro, is revealed to be a ped*phile. She is then sold to Ze Elidio’s gang by Mario, the boyfriend of Dionete.

One of the kidnappers, Prea, gets attracted to Janalice and wants to rescue her from being sold to Phillipe Souton and take her with him. However, his own life is in danger as Mariangel, whose husband and son were killed by Prea and his gang, is in search of him. It is later revealed that not Prea but Gigante was the one who killed Mariangel’s family.

As their search takes them on a similar path, Amadeu and Mariangel join hands to find Prea and rescue Janalice. However, Amadeu couldn’t fulfil his task and died, while Mariangel carries on. She also later spares Prea’s life and goes on to finish Amadeu’s mission and rescue Janalice from the trafficking gang.

She planned to make one of her old friends, Cristobal, appear as a buyer and purchase the teenage girl, and bring her back to a room from where she can easily rescue the girl. While going through numerous other difficulties, Cristobal successfully brings Janalice to his hideout; however, she attacks him, without knowing that he was actually helping her.

She was ready to flee with Prea. However, in a twist of fate in Rivers of Fate, Prea and Phillip ended up shooting each other, allowing Janalice to escape with Mariangel and gain complete freedom from the horrifying life.

Rivers of Fate: Janalice decides to stay with Mariangel

Janalice has been the victim from the beginning of Rivers of Fate. At the beginning, her parents, who were supposed to protect her, sent her somewhere else, which made her life more terrifying.

While her father tried to help her by sending Amadeu to look for her, and her mother earnestly waited for her daughter to return to her home, it was Mariangel who actually rescued the girl. Her parents had already failed her to protect once.

Therefore, at the end of Rivers of Fate, Janalice decides against reuniting with her mother and chooses to go with Mariangel instead. Mariangel turned out to be a better protector for Janalice than her own parents could ever be.
