The season finale of The Hunting Wives is unsettling, and one question lingers even after the credits roll: Does Kyle die?

May Cobb's hit novel is brought to life in the form of this psychological thriller, which spares no one. And the season ending brings the final reckoning for the obsession, lies, and impulsive decisions as they face the worst consequences.

Kyle's personality has always teetered on the edge of danger, never quite learned, never quite innocent. With The Hunting Wives season finale, though, his narrative takes a deadly turn. What starts as a fierce standoff does an unexpected flip, and there is no question: Kyle does not make it through the season, and he dies.

What does Kyle go through in The Hunting Wives season finale?

Sophie is in a life-threatening desperate situation in the more dire, lawless stages of The Hunting Wives. Kyle, erratic, threatening, and more and more unhinged by the minute, encounters her in a secluded thicket when she is extremely intoxicated. Scared, and desperately trying to survive, Sophie reacts impulsively. She drives over Kyle with her car and kills him.

Instead of reporting the crime to the authorities, Sophie decides otherwise. She gets rid of Kyle's body, starting yet another series of secrets. While she is pulling his body behind her, Margo is calling Kyle's phone, and Sophie remains silent as she answers the phone. That one move is enough to inform Margo that something terrible has happened, without uttering a single word.

Is there any uncertainty regarding Kyle's destiny?

No, there is not. Even with the increased emotion and rapid cutting of the final scenes, The Hunting Wives does not leave anyone guessing that Kyle survives. There is no scene in which he exists after this, no return, and no twist to reveal that he'd managed to survive. His death is conclusive. It concludes his part in the book and is the ultimate consequence of the characters' choices out of control.

Although the series does leave a little room for us to speculate what happens next, i.e., in terms of legal consequences, the reality of Kyle's death is not a matter for conjecture. Sophie's acts of killing him and hiding his body are depicted as being deliberate and irreversible.

Why Kyle's death matters in The Hunting Wives

Kyle's killing is not an opportunistic act of violence; it is the result of the group's dysfunctional dynamics and secret agendas. His own actions had been stumbling into danger for what had felt like an eternity, from his affair with Margo to his bullying of the other cast members. But his killing does not start with the group, and with Margo, it starts with Sophie, the sole character who'd been fighting most desperately to hold on.

By murdering Kyle, Sophie makes an ethical action which alters her as a character. She doesn't only respond, she acts. And the act is one of her expressions of trauma, never healed, which indicates to us that the fatal cycle of violence and covering is by no means over.

How Kyle's death alters the end of the story

The last few moments of The Hunting Wives are terrifying. Sophie's subdued tone when on the phone with Margo speaks volumes. The two women now have secrets too big to share, and Kyle's death is the unwritten bond that ties them all together. The series doesn't conclude on justice or closure, instead it ends on guilt, on denial, and on the very real threat of being caught.

Kyle's death is a turning point. It changes the relationship between Margo and Sophie. Above all, it takes the most explosive part of the series away, leaving just the aftermath.

Does anyone know what Sophie did?

At the end of the season, nothing. Sophie's actions are not recorded. Kyle's corpse is never discovered on television, and no suggestion is made that the police have some idea of what really happened. But the stigma of the deed hangs in abeyance. Margo may guess what really did happen, but she is not judging Sophie, yet. The season finale refuses procedural closure for psychological fallout.

This fight in the public sphere invites some future season to delve into legal and emotional consequences. But for now, Sophie escapes scot-free for having a secret that would destroy them all if exposed.

So yes, Kyle is killed at the end of The Hunting Wives. Sophie kills him in terror and desperation, and is never found by police. It isn't just at the beginning of the conclusion; it is the conclusion. It alters the course of the characters and primes the viewers for whatever consequences are yet to follow.

Kyle's death isn't fulfillment of his own nature; it's rather the utter destruction of the flimsy, fragile world built by the Hunting Wives. And now, the true price they've paid for what they've gained at last comes due.
