Since its launch on April 15, 2020, Outer Banks has been the Netflix adventure for anyone who is a fan of mystery, treasure chases, and teen angst that gets the Internet abuzz. Set against the sunny yet dangerous landscape of North Carolina, the series sets two worlds against each other: the Pogues, a working-class gang, and their wealthy enemies, the Kooks.
With treasure buried, betrayals, and danger in every alleyway, the series has been a standout hit for Netflix.
Outer Banks had been renewed for a fifth and final season by 2024, and Season 4 was released in two parts in October and November of that year. The Pogues, as always, evaded bullets, solved mysteries, and warred against the Kooks.
And there was one particular character who had been causing incessant speculations: Rafe Cameron, played by Drew Starkey. Having been in countless close calls with death, fans have one concern in mind: Does Rafe die for real in Outer Banks Season 4?
Does Rafe die in Outer Banks Season 4?

The short answer: no. Rafe Cameron makes it through Season 4, though it’s hardly smooth sailing. His storyline is densely filled with bloody confrontations, personal betrayals, and changing loyalties, each serving to make him a dangerous villain as well as a refreshingly complex character.
Episodes 6 and 7 provide one of Rafe’s most dramatic arcs of the season. When Chandler Groff, the season’s surprising revelation as JJ’s dad, is unable to pay back his $400,000 debt, Rafe takes him hostage. The situation escalates when Groff shows him that he was secretly bought off by Rafe’s fiancée, Sofia, to bring him into a bogus real estate scheme.
The backstab is crushing to Rafe, causing a dramatic split from Sofia and revealing cracks in his trust and judgment.
As if that weren’t bad enough, mercenaries involved in the current treasure war also hunt him down. The Pogues come to Rafe’s rescue in a violent confrontation sequence later in the season. Pope kills the mercenary Lightner to protect Cleo and avenge Captain Terrance, a parent figure to Cleo who died protecting others in a previous season segment.
Through it all, Rafe escapes physically unscathed. By season finale, he is very much alive, though not at peace.
His survival also creates a sharp contrast with the fate of another character: JJ Maybank. The fan-favorite Pogue dies in the season finale, a loss that shakes the group and alters the series’ dynamic heading into the fifth and final season.
About Outer Banks

Created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks is action-adventure, mystery, and teen drama in a perfect blend. The series revolves around John B. Rutledge and his friends, the Pogues, who are pulled into a season-spanning treasure hunt connected to John B’s dad, who is missing.
Throughout the series, they encounter a profound contrast in class between Pogues and Kooks, as well as push against friendship, love, and loyalty limits.
The show has garnered a global fan base due to its romance, dramatic intensity, and beach setting. Season 4 stepped it up a notch with fresh elements: villainous mercenaries, haunted artifacts, and treasure maps based on pirate mythology, such as Blackbeard's Blue Crown.
Set against this, characters such as Rafe Cameron excel, where personal conflicts completely overlap with the overarching treasure storyline.
Why does Rafe still matter in Outer Banks?
Rafe’s continued survival isn’t just a plot twist; it’s a narrative choice that keeps tension alive. His volatile nature, combined with shifting alliances and fractured family ties, makes him one of the most unpredictable players in the series.
Whether fans root for his downfall or secretly want him redeemed, his presence adds weight to the Pogues’ fight and ensures that every treasure hunt feels more dangerous. With its final season already greenlit, fans are in for Rafe’s story to once again cross paths in explosive and potentially fatal ways with the Pogues.
For the time being, however, there is no doubt about it: Rafe Cameron survives to see another day.
