The Buccaneers has introduced its most shocking twist yet. The Apple TV+ period drama revolves around a group of ambitious American women who arrive in London in the 1870s and navigate their love lives and friendships amid cultural clashes.

Since the beginning, the show has mostly stayed away from violence and has followed romantic and dramatic themes. However, in Season 2 Episode 6, the series ventures into a dark territory as James Seadown shoots his brother Richard Marable.

The moment leaves fans wondering whether Richard dies in The Buccaneers. The answer is yes. Richard, played by Josh Dylan, has been killed off in the series, leaving everyone surprised.

Richard dies in The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 6

Richard Marable dies in The Buccaneers Season 2, Episode 6, titled Every Single Piece of My Heart. The episode hints at something ominous from the very beginning. Jinny finds out that her husband, Lord Seadown, has taken their baby, Freddie. She and her friend Guy rush back to England to get him back.

However, Seadown lies to the newspapers, making people believe Jinny is crazy. Instead of getting her baby back, she gets taken to a mental asylum. Richard, who is Seadown’s older brother, and their sister Honoria decide to help Jinny. As per their plan, Richard engages Seadown in a conversation, while Honoria grabs baby Freddie and escapes.

Richard then frees Jinny from the room she is locked in. Just when it seems like they all might escape, Seadown shows up with a gun. At first, he threatens to shoot himself.

When Richard tries to calm him down, Seadown turns the gun on him and shoots him. Jinny runs back to the house after hearing the shot, only to find him dead on the floor. Thus, Richard died in The Buccaneers while trying to protect Jinny and her baby from his brother.

What The Buccaneers creator has said about Richard’s death

Following the shocking twist, The Buccaneers creator Katherine Jakeways had an interview with Variety, where she talked about why the writing team decided to introduce this particular plot in the show. She said:

“We talked a lot about whether it was going to feel like too much, and whether it was possible to do that in our world of fun. But we’ve explored difficult themes in the past, and we took it quite seriously in terms of whether it was going to work.”

She also opened up about how the moment is going to change the lead group forever and said:

“Once you’ve experienced something like this in life, you don’t really ever see the world in the same way again, do you? So it changes them, it changes the show and it makes them grow up, as all the little pieces of Season 2 have made them become women and more rounded people.”

The series stars Kristine Froseth as Annabel "Nan" St. George, Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown, Imogen Waterhouse as Virginia "Jinny" St. George, Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth, Mia Threapleton as Honoria Marable, Guy Remmers as Theodore, and Aubri Ibrag as Elizabeth "Lizzy" Elmsworth, among others.
