The CW's The Vampire Diaries' high popularity gave birth to its spin-off show, The Originals, which followed the story of vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson in New Orleans, one of the primary antagonists in the parent show.

While Klaus was often at odds with the Salvatore brothers (Paul Wesley's Stefan Salvatore and Ian Somerhalder's Damon Salvatore) in TVD, the spin-off series featured many arcs that somehow redeemed his character, especially after the birth of his daughter, Hope.

While The Originals is born out of The Vampire Diaries, the Salvatore brothers do not have a vital role in its story. Somerhalder does not even feature in any episode, with his on-screen brother, Wesley, making a minor appearance in season 3.

The spin-off show focused on an individual story, where Klaus moved to New Orleans with his siblings and family, after his exit from TVD as a main character.

More on this in our story.

The Originals was made because of The Vampire Diaries' success, but it does not feature the Salvatore brothers in a major arc. Unlike the parent show, which features the Salvatore brothers, the spin-off series focused on the Mikaelson siblings: Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah.

The spin-off show aptly utilised some of Klaus' lore from The Vampire Diaries and used it to expand the Mikaelson siblings' universe in the show. For instance, The Originals' backdoor Pilot revealed that Klaus' one-night stand with werewolf Hayley in TVD resulted in the birth of the first-ever tribrid.

Even while the spin-off show was set in the same universe as The Vampire Diaries, the Salvatore brothers are not essential to the story, and Ian Somerhalder does not appear in any episode throughout the show's five seasons.

In fact, the actor was "bitter" about the series, which led to Joseph Morgan and many other talented actors leaving The Vampire Diaries for the spin-off show. As Somerhalder revealed in a special QnA segment with Cinemablend,

“Klaus really ticked me off ’cause he left and went and got his own show. Rude. Oh my gosh, we, by ‘we’ I mean Paul and I, were so bitter with The Originals because we lost all of these amazing actors. Like, those were our peeps, dog. Plus, they had all those great accents. … Klaus was an amazing – Joseph Morgan is an insanely beautiful actor.”

The actor reiterated this opinion in another interview with Digital Spy:

"Now, they're going to be taking these characters that mean so much to our show. I'm insanely happy for everyone, but I'm not thrilled. Not that I mind sharing, I just don't want to lose all these amazing actors on our show."

Morgan, who gained immense popularity for playing Klaus, the anti-hero in The Vampire Diaries, eventually left the show after season 4 for The Originals. It was established that he moved to New Orleans, which became the plot for his spin-off show.

Do any of The Vampire Diaries' characters appear in The Originals?

While Somerhalder did not feature in any episode of the spin-off series, many TVD actors, including Paul Wesley, made guest appearances.

Wesley appeared as Stefan Salvatore in The Originals Season 3 Episode 14 titled "A Streetcar Named Desire", concluding one of the most memorable character arcs from the parent series. His encounter with Klaus led to the death of vampire huntress Rayna Cruz, who stabbed Stefan in TVD Season 7.

After he fled from her and reached St. James Infirmary in New Orleans, Klaus eventually killed Rayna, thus buying Stefan some time before she re-generates.

In addition to Paul Wesley, Michael Trevino's Tyler Lockwood, Candice King's Caroline Forbes, and Matthew Davis' Alaric Saltzman also appeared in the spin-off show. Actress Nina Dobrev, who played Katherine Pierce and Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries, also appeared as the original Petrova doppelganger, Tatia, in a Season 2 flashback sequence.
