Getting into negotiations is not an easy task, and getting a positive result throughout the situation is an art. Helping towards becoming a better negotiator, Lori Greiner stated that negotiating with someone they trust is comparatively better.
However, sometimes, there are threats and anger involved in the negotiations, which she says no to.
"Often people do better in negotiations when they're negotiating with someone that they trust and makes them feel seen and heard. Threats, anger, tend to turn people off and repel the other side and make them more combative and less willing to work with you. So don't do that," said the Shark Tank judge.
Further, she shared three tips for negotiations. The first was:
"Know your strengths."
While negotiating, getting prepared beforehand is the key. Knowing the strengths that you have in your negotiation is important. So that you can start with those points and go ahead from that.
Second tip that Lori revealed was:
"Stay composed."
Staying composed is an important aspect of any negotiation. It is because acting impulsively is not getting you anywhere, but getting into even more intense and unnecessary discussions. Shark Tank's Lori also said no to reacting impulsively during the negotiation.
The third tip was to explain the "why" and "what."
"Explain why you need what you need."
Lori Greiner mentioned that explaining what you need and the reason behind that would be a straightforward way to start the negotiation. Additionally, mentioning the "non-starter" would also be quite helpful.
Lastly, she mentioned, to win in negotiations, knowing what you "need" and being willing to "walk away" is an essential part:
"Also important, know what you need to get and be willing to walk away. That's how you win in negotiations."
