"Don't think he sees any issue": Untamed actor Wilson Bethel on playing a charming, dangerous apex predator in Netflix's latest series

Netflix's latest murder mystery series, Untamed, dropped on July 17, 2025, pulling viewers into a dark and twisted tale.

In the series, Wilson Bethel portrays the role of Shane Maguire. Maguire is a former Army Ranger turned wildlife officer in the Yosemite National Park. He does not like to engage in small talk or crowds and prefers to be left alone, far from the hustle and bustle. But he's no recluse as he doesn't hesitate to step out of the woods and have a fun night out at the bar.

Speaking to ScreenRant along with his co-stars Eric Bana and Lily Santiago, Bethel revealed some tidbits about his character, Shane Maguire. Bethel opened about his character's lifestyle dualities, and said,

“I don’t think he sees any issue with that kind of duality.”

Describing Shane Maguire as an 'apex predator', Bethel revealed,

"He’s not just a loner. He chooses when he wants a hit of the other part of the world. He is also very comfortable coming out of the woods and going to a bar for a night and maybe getting a little drunk and maybe seeing if he can find a woman to cozy up with.”

Wilson Bethel as Shane Maguire in Netflix's Untamed

Wilson Bethel has played lawyers, soldiers, and even one of Marvel's most unhinged villains. But in Netflix's Untamed, he plays Shane Maguire, a former Army Ranger who now works as a wildlife officer. Maguire isn't your average loner in the woods - he's calculative, controlled, and entirely at ease in the woods.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Bethel broke down his character and said,

"This is a guy who could shoot you dead, or shoot a deer dead, from 500 yards away–maybe further–and do it easily. If you have that kind of power in your hand, if you have the kind of power to live on your own in the wild for months at a time, I think you start to view yourself as pretty powerful. And, in nature, the most powerful things are predators.”

Playing Maguire meant getting comfortable with silence, with danger and nurture, a kind of primal confidence. Bethel's performance in the series is cool, sharp, and unpredictable. He doesn't overplay it. Maguire is a man who lives by his instincts, and Bethel taps into that with ease.

Apart from Netflix's Untamed, Bethel is set to reprise his role as Benjamin Poindexter aka Bullseye in the next season of Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again. In addition to it, he's also a part of Apple TV+'s upcoming psychological thriller Imperfect Women starring Elizabeth Moss and Kate Mara. He is set to portray the character of Scott in this series.
