When the Hawkins gang stock up on their fighting gear and their weapons in the Stranger Things Season 5 penultimate episode, fans of the show were convinced that the fight they were heading towards was going to be of epic proportions. So, when Nancy and the rest of the party finally find their way into the Abyss, to discover a barren wasteland missing any of the demogorgons, demodogs, or demobats that we've seen for the entirety of the show.

In the Stranger Things lore, the Abyss is portrayed to be the Mind Flayer and his creatures' home. So, when the Hawkins gang makes their way to Vecna's home turf, they are more than prepared to face an army of demo-creatures. But to their surprise, and the audience's, the creatures are absent, and their final fight is against a physical form of the Mind Flayer itself, and Eleven against Vecna.

In a recent conversation with The Wrap, the Duffer brothers explain why they made this choice to leave the democreatures out of this equation. The brothers explain that even though they had considered including a demo battle along with the Mind Flayer battle, their final decision was against it.

We obviously discussed having a demo battle on top of the Mind Flayer battle, but it felt more right to us that why does he need the demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them? He doesn’t need his little ant army to attack, he’s going to take care of this himself. It’s a giant, desolate planet.

They also went on to add that for them, the demogorgons had served their use in the fourth episode of Stranger Things Season 5, and too much reliance on the demo-creatures could lead to demofatigue:

"One of the other things we talked about was just demo fatigue. I felt like we did everything we wanted to do with them in “Sorcerer,” and wanting to keep the focus on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, who’s been absent this season."

According to them, Vecna was not expecting the gang to be able to make their way to the Abyss in any way possible, so he didn't feel the need to have the Abyss and the Mind Flayer surrounded by the demo-creatures as well. For Henry, he thinks the Mind Flayer can take care of itself and even defeat the little army of humans without any need for a democreature or two.

"Mainly it’s just that Vecna was not expecting this sneak attack on his home turf. Never in a million years could he even imagine that they’re there somewhere."

Well, that was an underestimation, to say the least.
