Fans of The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub have wanted to see their favorite story come to life on screen for a long time, but now it appears that this project has reached yet another hurdle. The Duffer Brothers have now confirmed that Netflix's adaptation of The Talisman will no longer be made. This comes after many years of development and several previous attempts by various studios/producers to create a film/series based on the book. The original announcement of the project occurred in March 2021, when it was revealed that the Duffers would be working as executive producers on the series. Many fans believed that because of their success with Stranger Things, they would be well-suited to finally adapt the well-known book. The Talisman was published in 1984 and quickly became a New York Times Bestseller. It has been one of King's and Peter Straub's most popular works. However, like so many Stephen King-related projects, the adaptation has been challenged, delayed, and re-envisioned for decades.Ross Duffer explained in the interview that the project is no longer at Netflix and that their own involvement has ended. He said,"Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we're not involved."Matt Duffer added that adapting the story was far more difficult than they expected, admitting,"I think it was probably naive of us to think we could break The Talisman."Their comments make it clear that while they were excited about the idea at first, the story proved to be harder to translate into a series than they had hoped. This is not the first time The Talisman has been stuck in development. Ross Duffer even shared that he remembers reading a film script for the book many years ago when he was still an intern. He said that The Talisman "has been in development forever," and he expressed disappointment that they could not be the ones to finally bring it to the screen. Why did The Talisman fall apart at Netflix? The version announced in 2021 had an experienced team attached. Curtis Gwinn, a writer and executive producer on Stranger Things, was set to be the showrunner and the main writer for the adaptation. The series was also planned to be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, which had once hoped to make a film version, and by Paramount Television Studios. With such well-known names involved, many fans believed that the project finally had a stable foundation. The entertainment industry transitioned significantly in the past four years. After being involved in an animated and live-action series, Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85, the Duffers had moved on from this project when they transitioned from Netflix to Paramount. With all of these factors combined with the difficulty Netflix and Paramount faced when trying to acquire Warner Bros. While these changes may have contributed to the loss of momentum within the adaptation's creative process, there remained no clear path to continue bringing all the parties together for the adaptation. Therefore, the adaptation's eventual collapse allowed Netflix to discontinue its involvement with the adaptation project as well. The "curse" that has plagued The Talisman for years, according to Duffer, prevented them from having the ability to produce anything. In the words of Matt Duffer, "It will be whoever does it and cracks it," indicates that they recognize the further possibilities in the source material, even though they don't feel they will be the ones to complete that particular job. What happens next for The Talisman and its fans? The adaptation will no longer be produced by Netflix, but fans still have news coming from Stephen King, who has confirmed the writing of Talisman 3. This novel will be released sometime in the future, as he stated back in July that "TALISMAN 3 is almost done," but no dates have been announced for its release. The Talisman series' story follows the journey of a twelve-year-old boy named Jack through the country in search of a magical amulet that will save his mom and protect the world. The story takes place in the realms of The Territories, which are part of Stephen King's Dark Tower Universe. Black House, The Talisman's second volume, follows the adult life of Jack. The authors have created an extensive universe through their novels and a wealth of fans, so there is hope that the books will be adapted into a series at some point. The announcement from the Duffer's Brothers comes after an interesting time for many of Stephen King's adaptations that made their way onto screens, including: The Monkey, The Institute, The Long Walk, The Running Man, and IT: Welcome to Derry. Some of these adaptations were received favourably, illustrating that there is still interest in the works of King and, therefore, that most fans anticipate The Talisman returning to production at a later stage, although it may take a while.Unfortunately, the Netflix project will no longer be produced, and the Duffer Brothers are done with the project, marking yet another attempt to adapt The Talisman. However, the door is not completely shut as it could be reopened in the future.
