Stranger Things just came to an end with its fifth season on New Year's Eve 2025, and the fans aren't ready to say goodbye to Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven, Max, Nancy, Steve, Jonathan, Robin, and other characters of the show yet. These characters have been a part of the fans' lives for years, and thus, it is hard to say goodbye to them.

Since there is one spin-off of the show still in development, fans were hoping that some of the main characters would return in it. The Duffer Brothers have finally given an official statement regarding whether any of the main Stranger Things characters will ever appear in a live-action spin-off.

The Duffer Brothers confirm that the Stranger Things characters will not return again

Stranger Things: Tales from '85, a spin-off of the original show, is set to be released on Netflix in 2026, and another spin-off is in development. Tales from '85 will feature animated versions of the Stranger Things characters and will be set between seasons 2 and 3, which means we won't exactly be seeing the return of the characters after the Season 5 ending.

The other spin-off, which is currently untitled, will not have any characters from the original show. It will tell us more about the rock that Henry heard in the briefcase, which led him to finding the Mind Flayer. The show will not be a deeper exploration of the Mind Flayer exactly, but it will help us understand the rock and the story behind it. The Duffer Brothers have now confirmed that the characters of the original show won't ever return in a live-action spin-off. In an interview with Collider, when asked if Season 5 of the show is the last time we saw the characters in live-action, the Duffer Brothers simply said,

"Yes."

They have confirmed in the clearest way possible that the characters of Stranger Things won't be returning again in any live-action projects. This is in alignment with the description of the untitled spin-off that The Duffer Brothers gave in an interview with Variety. When asked to describe the rock in the briefcase that we saw in Henry's memory, they couldn't say much without having to admit that a spin-off would explain more about the rock. Matt Duffer explained,

"I do want to explain, just because people’s expectations go in certain directions: The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining."

Speaking more about the spin-off, Matt also said,

"So, we’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology."

When asked if the spin-off will have only new characters and no common ones, Matt confirmed,

"Right. Exactly. No common characters."

Thus, we now know for sure that the main characters of Stranger Things won't be returning in any future live-action projects.

All episodes of Stranger Things are streaming on Netflix.
