Stranger Things Season 5 is going to premiere soon, and besides anticipating what the next season holds, fans are hoping none of the main characters die. In Season 4, Eddie Munson died while fighting in the Upside Down, and Billy Hargrove died after being controlled by the Mind Flayer.

Eddie was part of the show for just one season but became a fan favorite, and his death has made fans worry that more deaths are coming. But that might not happen. As Stranger Things Memes posted on X, the Duffer Brothers reportedly opened up about the cons of killing main characters in Stranger Things Season 5.

What the Duffer Brothers reportedly said about the cons of killing off main characters in Stranger Things Season 5

Stranger Things Season 5 will be the darkest season of the show yet, featuring some of the most brutal fight scenes. All questions that have been unanswered in previous seasons will finally get answered in the final season. But as Will, Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Steve, Jonathan, Nancy, Robin, Jim, Joyce, Murray, and Karen face Vecna for the last time, some deaths are being anticipated. Shows as big as Stranger Things are known to end with a bang, and that usually means a main character dies.

But that might not be the case for Stranger Things Season 5. As Stranger Things Memes (@SThingsMeme) posted on X, the Duffer Brothers reportedly said,

"What often holds us back is you have to talk about the repercussions. This is a total hypothetical: You kill Mike. It just makes the show rather depressing and bleak, and it becomes entirely about that."

They used the hypothetical of killing off Mike to emphasize that if a main character like him were killed, the ending would become more about that loss than the victory against Vecna. Since Stranger Things Season 5 is the final season, and the story will end with this season, Vecna is most likely not going to win. Thus, it is best to focus on the victory rather than mourn the loss of a main character fans love dearly. Such a death takes away from the show’s highly anticipated ending.

However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any deaths. Stranger Things Season 5 is the final season of a show that has garnered millions of fans worldwide and has run for almost a decade. Somebody is likely to die, even if it’s not any of the main characters.

Also, just because the Duffer Brothers used Mike’s name as an example to express the cons of killing off a main character, it doesn’t confirm that Mike’s life is specifically in danger. All characters will be facing their hardest battles this season, but as of now, no deaths have been strongly hinted at. Still, if you’re a true Stranger Things fan, it’s best to prepare for some heartbreak, because we never know what’s coming.

Stranger Things Season 5 will be released in three volumes on November 26, 2025, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve, respectively.
