HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4 expanded on Ellie and Dina's storyline in Seattle, after they escaped from Jackson to avenge Joel's death.
Going into The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4, fans of the game knew what was coming. HBO's show not only moved to the next phase of Ellie's life as she prepares to exact revenge on Abby, but her relationship with Dina also saw significant changes.
Ellie and Dina each had a monumental secret and were keeping it from each other. Episode 4 finally saw the big reveal of Ellie's immunity and Dina's pregnancy come out in the open for the couple.
While the big reveals were played out very differently in the show, they added a fresh perspective to Ellie and Dina's chemistry and even made me intrigued for their future.
More on Ellie and Dina's changed dynamics in The Last of Us Season 2 in our story.
Ellie and Dina's big reveals are played out differently in The Last of Us Season 2
Talking about The Last of Us Part II game, Ellie's immunity reveal is played out much differently. Since the infection can also be transmitted through airborne spores, when Ellie and Dina are escaping in the subway, Ellie's gas mask accidentally breaks and she inhales the spores.
When Dina realises that Ellie has been compromised, the latter reluctantly tells Dina the secret about her immunity.
However, in The Last of Us Season 2, Ellie willingly puts her arm in the infected's jaw to save Dina, resulting in an infected bite mark. When Dina realises that Ellie is bitten by an infected and she has to kill the love of her life, Ellie reveals her immunity secret to her.
Similarly, Dina's pregnancy reveal is also played out differently in The Last of Us Season 2 than in the game. In the video game, when Dina finally musters up the courage to reveal her pregnancy, Ellie lashes out at her and calls her a burden. She blames her for jeopardising their plan to avenge Joel's death.
However, in the HBO show, Ellie does not lash out at Dina when she reveals her pregnancy. Instead, she expresses her happiness and is even ready to co-parent the child with Dina and Jesse.
I think The Last of Us Season 2 change made Dina and Ellie's relationship even stronger
While The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4 took a daring step by introducing such major changes in Ellie and Dina's relationship, I think these worked in their favor.
In the video game, Ellie's immunity reveal is accidental and doesn't really help her relationship with Dina. In fact, the couple had their first big fight after the pregnancy reveal because Ellie called Dina a burden. She was so focused on avenging Joel's death in the video game that Dina's good news holds no value for her.
But The Last of Us Season 2 introduced the above changes, adding another layer to their chemistry. Ellie's immunity reveal is not accidental; she heroically sacrifices herself for Dina, highlighting her love.
In addition, after Dina reveals she is pregnant, Ellie is happy and even excited to co-parent the child with Jesse and Dina. The couple also sleeps together for the first time, highlighting how this reveal even brought them closer.
While the video game made Dina's pregnancy reveal the cause for the couple's rift, the show brought them together. Albeit a radical change from video game, I think Ellie and Dina are heading to become a much better couple as they were in The Last of Us Part II.
