HBO has pulled the plug on Elon Musk’s SpaceX limited series, leaving the project back on the market as it searches for a new streaming home. The six-part series was based on Ashlee Vance's 2017 biography Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. The project was announced back in October 2020.

On Wednesday, Ashlee Vance took to X to announce that the SpaceX limited series has 'died' at HBO:

“Well, it’s super sad, but this long-running project with HBO has died. We were going to make a dramatized series about the early days of @elonmusk and @SpaceX. Had some wonderful scripts. They were smart and funny and true to life. I imagine it would have been a massive hit.”

Star Trek Beyond and The Cloverfield Paradox alum Doug Jung was attached to the project as a creator and an executive producer. Additionally, Vance, Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin & Peter Kiernan from Free Association and former HBO Films boss Len Amato were all set to serve as executive producers on the series before it was scrapped at HBO.

More on this in our story.

Elon Musk's SpaceX limited series officially scrapped at HBO

Elon Musk, the popular X owner, businessman and entrepreneur, launched his private aerospace and space transportation company (SpaceX) at the Starbase development site in Texas back in 2002. SpaceX was launched to decrease the cost of space launches, thus paving the way for a self-sustaining colony on Mars, a lifelong dream and passion of Musk.

The SpaceX limited series was about Elon Musk's private space company and the launch of Falcon 9 on May 30, 2020. To fulfill his dream project, Elon Musk handpicked a team of engineers and sent them to a remote Pacific Island, where they conceptualized and built the Falcon 9, the first SpaceX rocket to carry a crew into orbit, launched in May 2020.

Falcon 9 successfully docked into the International Space Station the following day and returned with the two-man crew of Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken (on Earth) on August 2. Reportedly, Elon Musk was not attached to the SpaceX limited series as an executive producer or consultant.

While HBO has not given a statement about the recent cancellation, Ashlee Vance continued on X. Talking about the SpaceX limited series, he wrote:

“Hollywood is hard. And HBO went through too many gyrations for this one to keep the requisite energy. People also seem afraid to make something about Elon. As a result, the IP rights on my biography have reverted to me. If there are serious offers out there to make something amazing, my mind and inbox are open.”

This suggests that Vance is still interested in bringing Elon Musk's biography to life and will look for more streaming platforms.

Elon Musk has been in the spotlight lately for backing Donald Trump, emerging as one of the most significant contributors to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. After Trump's inauguration as the US president, Musk even had a short-lived role as the Senior Advisor to the President, which he quit after a public feud with Trump.
