In Episode 19 of Elsbeth Season 2, titled “What Lies Beneath,” viewers were taken on one of the show’s darkest and smartest journeys yet. This episode flips the detective story format.

We meet the killer at the start, and the real fun is watching how Elsbeth connects the dots and brings him down. It’s a twisted, shocking ride full of clever writing, emotional moments, and powerful commentary on wealth and justice.

The episode kicks off with Rod Bedford, a rich heir to a gun empire, bragging about all the wild things he’s done in life, like filling a car with $100 bills or darting zebras from a helicopter. He’s done everything… except commit murder. And that’s what makes him dangerous.

Rod doesn’t act like a normal villain. He’s rich, bored, and always chasing the next thrill. He hints early on that he’s looking for a new experience, something even more exciting than his past stunts. This sets the stage for everything that follows.

Elsbeth and Detective Blancy are called to check out a murder. It seems like just another homeless man, but surprise! He’s actually Prince Wilhelm von Haler, a billionaire European royal who was secretly living in New York.

The killing was clean and professional. The shooter used a small gun with a silencer, fired three shots, and picked up the shell casings. It was clearly a planned execution.

Enter Agent Wes MacArthur from the TCIU. He believes the Crown-Free Movement, a feminist group from the prince’s country, is behind the murder. His reasoning? The assassin probably used a “lady gun.”

MacArthur’s theory is built on stereotypes and weak guesses. Elsbeth, of course, isn’t convinced. Especially when she meets Rod Bedford snooping around the crime scene, pretending to look at property nearby.

Elsbeth smells something fishy

Rod’s reason for being at the crime scene doesn’t make sense. He says he’s thinking of buying a nearby warehouse. Elsbeth isn’t buying it.

Rod casually tells Elsbeth, “Everything is for sale.” She fires back with, “Then nothing’s really precious.” This moment hits hard; it captures what the whole episode is really about: power, money, and how they can corrupt everything.

Elsbeth digs into Rod’s background and finds the Canister Club, a rich boys’ playground with illegal gun ranges and secret parties. It’s a symbol of how the ultra-rich live by different rules.

Rod’s friend explains that Rod once had Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo perform at his home and even has keys to the Sistine Chapel. Nothing impresses him anymore. He needs a new thrill, and murder is next on his list.

Blancy gets a tempting offer from Captain Kershaw to join a special task force. But it would mean leaving her precinct and her close partnership with Elsbeth.

Blancy struggles with the decision, unsure how to tell Elsbeth. Their friendship has been a backbone of the show, and the idea of them parting ways is emotional for them and for fans.

Officer Reynolds finds a strange comment online by someone named “Ivan Deer” about the victim’s shoes, info that wasn’t made public.

Turns out “Ivan Deer” is a fake bot account created by Rod to boost his own social media. But only the killer would know what shoes the prince was wearing. This is the smoking gun Elsbeth needs.

Elsbeth, trying to get more proof, sneaks into Rod’s club to look at his private notebook. Rod catches her and has her arrested for harassment.

In court, Judge Dustin, who already dislikes Elsbeth, denies her bail. Suddenly, she’s in jail, despite being the one uncovering the truth. It's a brutal twist.

Blancy steps up while Elsbeth’s behind bars

While Elsbeth is locked up, Blancy keeps working. She finds security footage showing someone in the alley the night of the murder.

The feminist group falsely takes credit for the killing. Agent MacArthur closes the case, but Blancy doesn’t buy it.

Blancy visits Elsbeth in jail and tells her she’s taking the new job. Elsbeth, ever the bigger person, encourages her to go for it.

Even behind bars, Elsbeth is thinking about others. It shows her true strength and how much she values their friendship.

Elsbeth uses her one call to help Blancy make the final connection: Rod’s bot account proves he knew details only the killer would know.

Blancy confronts Rod with this evidence. His rich-boy confidence crumbles. When asked why he killed the prince, Rod just says he “looked like a loser.”

Rod didn’t kill for revenge or gain. He did it because he was bored. That makes him even scarier, a person so rich and jaded that murder becomes entertainment.

Rod’s attitude shows just how broken he is inside. He doesn’t see people as human, only as part of his twisted bucket list.

Police search Rod’s house and find the murder weapon, hoodie, and even fake letters used to frame the Crown-Free group.

Ironically, the group didn’t kill the prince, but his death still sparked change. The royal family fled, and the monarchy is collapsing.

Even though Rod is arrested, Elsbeth stays in jail. The system punishes her more than the killer. Why? Because she stood up to power.

The episode ends with Elsbeth being transferred to a scary detention center, full of people she helped put behind bars. For the first time, she’s truly afraid.

Will Elsbeth survive? Will Rod actually face justice? What happens to Blancy? So many questions left hanging.

In the end, the episode shows what Elsbeth is all about: challenging power, fighting for justice, and doing what’s right, even when the system doesn’t.

“What Lies Beneath” is one of Elsbeth’s most powerful episodes. It gives us a smart mystery, unforgettable characters, and a deep message about money, power, and justice. It leaves us with heavy questions and a desperate hope that in the finale, the truth, and Elsbeth, will finally come out on top.
