Emily in Paris: Lily Collins on relating to her character

Emily's love life in Paris is as colorful and unpredictable as the city itself. Her journey begins with Gabriel, who is her charming downstairs neighbor and a talented chef. Despite their undeniable chemistry, their relationship is complicated by Gabriel's existing relationship with Camille, who, in turn, is Emily's friend.
This love triangle creates tension and drama for Emily in Paris. Especially when Emily and Gabriel's feelings for each other become more apparent. Later, Emily meets Alfie. He is a British banker in her French class. Initially, Alfie is unimpressed by Emily's enthusiasm for Paris. But over time, they develop a connection. And that adds another chapter to Emily's romantic adventures.
Mindy Chen is an aspiring singer and Emily's first friend in the city. She becomes her confidante and support system in Emily in Paris. Both of them sail through life in Paris together and have hilarious experiences along the way. Many of these moments come from Emily adjusting to the city and its ways. Lily Collins has mentioned that she herself had a few similar experiences and shared them with British Vogue.
“It’s funny, because a lot of the experiences are based off of things that have happened to friends of Darren [Star] – that classically American thing of going to another country and being really… alienated yet trying to embrace it. When I got to Paris for filming, I actually had so many experiences like Emily – to the point that I asked the team, ‘Are you planning this to try and give me more empathy for her? I already have empathy for her!’ I mean, the heating in my apartment broke for two weeks; I got the floor wrong in my building; my elevator stopped working… I even nearly stepped in dog poop. It’s a cliché, but it’s also a fundamentally human scenario. In the end, it’s all about Emily’s attitude; she just gets through it, and she does it with a little bit of humour.”
It’s these small and relatable challenges that make Emily in Paris so charming and easy to connect with. Emily’s attitude, her humor, and her curiosity turn every awkward or difficult moment that she faces into an experience that's worth enjoying. And so, the show is a fun watch for anyone curious about life in the City of Lights.
