When Netflix released Emily in Paris Season 5, fans were treated to something very sweet and sentimental at the end of every episode. While the closing credits were winding down and the show had finished running, viewers could see just as the credits rolls started to fade after the show had completed its run, "In memory of Diego Borella" appeared on the screen. While this phrase may be easily missed, most people in the cast and crew of the series know that it is in tribute to one of their Assistant Directors, Diego Borella, who died before they finished filming Season 5.

At the time of his death, Diego Borella was only 47 years old. He died in August while the cast and crew were working in Venice on Emily in Paris season 5. According to Us Weekly, Diego Borella collapsed while he was at the Hotel Danieli, where he was preparing to film a scene with the team.

The reports said it happened very suddenly, and people on set were shaken. Everyone stopped work for a while. The production team of Emily in Paris also sent out a short note saying they were heartbroken and thinking of his family. That statement came from Paramount Television Studios, and it showed how deeply the loss was felt behind the scenes.

After two days, filming of Emily in Paris continued, because that is usually how film and TV sets have to work, even when something painful happens. But it is clear that Diego remained on their minds, and the tribute in the finale was their way of making sure his name stayed with the show.

Emily in Paris Season 5 ended in Venice, with extra meaning behind it

The fifth season of Emily in Paris travels to a few places outside France, but the big final moments take place in Venice. Marcello's latest show at Venice Fashion Week holds great significance for him as it marks the start of something new with his own brand name. Emily, who supports Marcello's efforts, juggles both work commitments while attending this event.

After Borella's heartbreaking death, the entire cast and crew felt a great deal of emotion when filming in that city. This isn't something that audience members are able to see on the screen, so returning to complete filming in Venice days after Borella's passing was filled with a variety of emotions for everyone involved in the Venice sequences. The setting does hold significant importance in Season 5.

At the end of Emily in Paris Season 5, Marcello has success launching his first Collection and informs Emily that he is moving back to Italy to run his family's Fashion House. Emily is devastated because she loves Paris and does not wish to leave. The two ultimately decide to go their separate ways. Neither seems particularly happy about it. This is an emotional undercurrent throughout the entire series, as well as Emily’s growing work responsibilities and uncertain future.

There is also a small hint about Emily's old relationship with Gabriel. In the final moments, she gets a postcard from him, asking her to meet him in Greece. The director and executive producer, Andrew Fleming, spoke to Us Weekly about that, saying that the connection between Emily and Gabriel has always been important. He also said that if there is an Emily in Paris Season 6, the two characters will still have many moments together, though he didn’t explain what those moments might be.

What the cast shared about the characters and the show's direction

Lucas Bravo, who plays Gabriel, has talked about his character in several interviews, including one with IndieWire in 2024. He said he sometimes feels far from the "sexy chef" version of Gabriel that viewers first met in Emily in Paris Season 1. Some fans thought these comments meant he might leave the show. But Fleming made it clear that Bravo's character isn't being written out. Instead, Gabriel is put on a new path. He leaves his restaurant job and becomes a private chef on a wealthy businessman's yacht, which opens up new directions for the story.

Emily's work life also changes again. She had already been asked to help run a branch of her company in Rome, and the season keeps showing how she moves between Rome and Paris. She keeps struggling with her choices, trying to decide what she wants for herself. These decisions set up several possible storylines if Netflix gives the show another season.

Even with all these plot points, many viewers say that the tribute to Diego Borella stayed with them the longest. It was simple and quiet, but it reminded people that every show is built by many hands, including people whose names viewers rarely hear. The line at the end of the episode was small, but it carried real feeling, because it came from the team who worked with him every day.

Emily in Paris Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
