Most conspiracies go nowhere, but for Ethan Hawke’s character in The Lowdown, one brings him trouble he did not anticipate. The upcoming FX show is set to be released on Hulu on 23rd September 2025. It will follow Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, whose exploration of the Washberg family leads to threats against him and his family.

If you’re wondering when it all started, the trailer shows Lee Raybon suddenly pulling out a gun at someone and yelling:

"Citizens's arrest. Ha! Ha ha ha!"

It only gets worse from this point.

About The Lowdown and what awaits Ethan Hawke's character

Created by Sterlin Harjo, The Lowdown follows Lee Raybon, who loves to explore conspiracies and share his insights with everyone, which is why he also publishes some of them. Raybon’s hobby has gotten him into trouble before, and this time exploring a powerful family makes it even riskier.

As the trailer’s narrator says:

"He's rough around the edges. Now and again, he gets in over his head."

We see a few clips of him getting beaten up for angering people with his publications. But this time, it’s more dangerous. Lee discovers intriguing things, as the trailer mentions:

"...hidden tunnels, some freaky stuff, stolen art."

However, his exploration leads to a dangerous point when his family’s lives are threatened.

As The Lowdown trailer’s YouTube description states:

FX’s The Lowdown from Creator Sterlin Harjo and starring Executive Producer Ethan Hawke, follows the gritty exploits of citizen journalist “Lee Raybon” (Hawke), a self-proclaimed Tulsa “truthstorian” whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. When the publication of Lee’s latest exposé – a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family – is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of “Dale Washberg” (Tim Blake Nelson), Lee knows he’s stumbled onto something big.

Lee has always gotten away with pursuing potentially dangerous topics. But this time, the consequences are unexpectedly brutal, as it also affects his family. The comedic aspect of the show, which accompanies the fear of impending danger, complements Ethan Hawke’s portrayal of Lee Raybon. The supporting characters seem interesting as well and will likely have their own arcs to explore.

The series stars Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Francis, Kaniehtiio Horn as Samantha, Tim Blake Nelson as Dale Washberg, Jeanne Tripplehorn as Betty Jo, Kyle MacLachlan as Donald Washberg, and Keith David as Marty.

The Lowdown will be released on Hulu on 23rd September 2025.
