Euphoria was the first big break for many actors, including Sydney Sweeney. The actress was just twenty years old when she filmed the first season of Euphoria. Now, the twenty-seven-year-old actress is returning to play Cassie after being praised for her roles in The White Lotus (2021), Anyone But You (2023), and Immaculate (2024).

As Sydney Sweeney is filming the third season of Euphoria, she spoke about playing Cassie, season three, and how playing Cassie was life-changing in an interview with Empire.

Sydney Sweeney on Euphoria season three

Sydney Sweeney played Cassandra Howard, aka Cassie, in Euphoria for two seasons and is reprising her role for the third season. To put it in short, Cassie has gone through a lot already. She has been forced to get an abortion, dated her best friend's toxic and abusive ex, Nate, and spiralled out completely doing so.

Life has been insanely chaotic for Cassie, Maddie, Rue, Jules, Kat, and Lexie. Apparently, it's going to get worse, as confirmed by Sydney Sweeney. In an interview with Empire, when Sweeney was asked how it feels to return to her role, she responded,

I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear. She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love. It could be a sad version of love, as well. It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is. Sam [Levinson] is such a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, “Let’s go crazier.” And he’s like, “I’m all in.” And this season is unhinged.

When the interviewer follows up by asking if it's more unhinged than earlier seasons, Sweeney, without giving too much away, said,

(Laughs) Yes.

While no plot details have been revealed about Euphoria season three yet, we know that the show will have a time jump. The protagonists are no longer teenagers in East Highland, California, they are adults who have graduated from high school. It will be interesting to see how these characters have evolved, where they are in their respective lives, yet still tied to each other.

As Sweeney hinted at an even more unhinged season, all we can guess is that, despite becoming adults, the characters will fall back into their old patterns if they are given enough reasons. Fezco got shot at the end of season two, and then Angus Cloud, the actor who played him, passed away in 2023. This means we will not be seeing Fezco in season there, something that will greatly affect Lexie's character, given how close they were.

It would be refreshing to see a more mature and put-together Cassie in season three. While her wild actions were entertaining up till this point, they might not bode well for an older Cassie. Sweeney, in the Empire interview, also talked about how playing the unhinged character had set a particular image in the audience's heads, saying,

It definitely changed my life, yeah. I think that with the amount of access, with social media, and how much content gets put out there of Cassie... People do have a hard time separating actors from their characters, and especially someone like Cassie, where she is hated and she’s loved, but she’s definitely a complicated character. And so I think that that could confuse people, for sure. But if they’re hating me for decisions that my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly.

Season three of Euphoria is in production and is expected to come out in 2026. The first two seasons of Euphoria are streaming on Max.
