Star Trek: Picard is one of the more celebrated series from the franchise that not only delved deep into the life of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) but also gave the much-awaited reunion of the USS Enterprise-D crew. That said, Star Trek is incomplete without some shocking casualties.
Several Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) characters made appearance in Picard, with not many living to tell the tale. In the final season of Picard, fans bid farewell to some of the more memorable Star Trek legacy characters.
TNG Characters that bid farewell in Star Trek: Picard Season 3
1) Elizabeth Shelby
Elizabeth Shelby (played by Elizabeth Dennehy) first appeared in The Next Generation in the episodes ‘The Best of Both Worlds’. After Captain Picard is kidnapped by the Borg to be assimilated as the Locutus of Borg, Shelby takes over as the First officer on the Enterprise. She would later be promoted to Starfleet Admiral.
In the episode 9 titled ‘Vox’, Borg takes control of Enterprise-F. Picard tries to warn her but fails. Admiral Elizabeth Shelby, who was Starfleet flag officer in command, is surrounded by Borg’s assimilated crew and is shot dead.
2) Lore
In the episode 8 titled ‘Surrender’, Data is struggling to fight off his evil brother Lore as both their personalities take over the shared synthetic body built by Dr. Altan Inigo Soong (played by Brent Spiner). Data surrenders to Lore and lets him access his memories from his days in the Enterprise. But unknown to Lore, Data ends up overwriting Lore and finally takes control of the body as Lore passes on. Lore is now part of Data, whose remnants are only a memory.
3) Commander Ro Laren
Commander Ro Laren (played by Michelle Forbes) is an operative from the Starfleet Intelligence. In the episode 5 titled ‘Imposters’, she comes on USS Titan-A to investigate the Changeling threat and reconcile with Picard with whom she had a fallout in The Next Generation. Changeling agents had placed a bomb on USS Intrepid, Commander’s Ro’s shuttle. They were about to fire at Titan when Ro pilots it into the Intrepid’s nacelle, giving the time for Titan to leave. She also gives Picard her earring, which they learn later had all the information related to her investigations.
4) The Borg Queen
One of the most dreaded villains in Star Trek, the Borg Queen (played by Alice Krige) died after the Borg Cube is destroyed by Picard and USS Enterprise-D crew. The Borg Queen assimilates Picard’s son Jack Crusher (played by Ed Speleers) and he is tuned into Vox of Borg. As Vox, Jack leads the charge to assimilate all young Starfleet officers to create Borg Collective. In the season finale titled ‘The Last Generation’, Borg Queen’s plans are foiled by Picard and the crew when the Enterprise attacks the Cube.
Star Trek: The Original Series was created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. The Star Trek franchise expanded beyond its original series through a wide array of media, including comic books, animated adaptations, feature films, and spin-off shows like The Next Generation and Picard.
