Developed by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time is a fantasy series based on the books of the same name by Robert Jordan.

Starring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, and others, the series aired for three seasons from 2021 to 2025 on Amazon Prime Video. However, The Wheel of Time was canceled after the third season.

After news of its cancellation, cast member Natasha O’Keeffe told Collider that everyone was “gutted” because they were hopeful about the show after an intense third season. The show focused on Moiraine Damodred (Pike), who is a member of the Aes Sedia, an organization of women who can channel the “One Power.”

The organization seeks a group of four young people from Emond’s Field, as one of them could be the reincarnation of the Deagon, a channeler who can “Break the World.” The reincarnation of the Dragon will either save the world from an evil entity called the “Dark One” or cause it to break again.

Natasha O’Keeffe plays Lanfear in the show.

O’Keeffe played the role of Lanfear in the second and third seasons, and her role became increasingly important as the show progressed. In an interview with Collider, she discussed her reaction to the surprising cancellation of The Wheel of Time. The actress explains that she was shocked to hear the news along with the others and thought about creator Rafe Judkins.

O’Keeffe mentioned that she believed Judkins would have known about the cancellation before anyone else. She also noted that everyone involved with the show was “hopeful,” feeling:

“It felt like we only got started,” and that “Season 3 had landed itself ready to take flight.” She further states that “Lanfear was only warming up.”

In the same interview, O’Keeffe also discussed how an actor handles the sudden cancellation of a show and their character, stating that

“I guess you take the hit, and then you just have to sort of move on.”

Unfortunately, O’Keeffe also revealed that no one could say a formal goodbye to each other as everyone expected a new season. The actress mentioned that she worked with a “lovely team,” and ultimately, one has to move on and keep going. Finally, she said she was “sorry” for the fans because the show was not getting renewed, but as an actress, she was thankful for how she could contribute to the series.

Reasons behind the cancellation of The Wheel of Time

In May of this year, Deadline first reported that the fantasy series would not be renewed for a fourth season. Although the show had a dedicated fanbase, financial issues and declining viewership led to its cancellation.

According to Deadline, The Wheel of Time experienced a drop in viewership after falling out of Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart following the first three weeks of Season 3, even though it remained on the list during the first two seasons. The series cost a significant amount to produce, as is common for most fantasy shows.

Deadline also reported that Prime Video discussed about the financial cost of the show and also had discussions with the lead studio, Sony TV. Even though Prime Video executives themselves stated that the show was getting creatively better, finances were a huge concern and therefore the hard step was taken.

According to Radio Times, a petition titled, “Save The Wheel of Time” had been created and over 100,000 signatures were amassed. On the other hand, lead star of the show, Rosamund Pike shared a picture of herself as her character Moiraine on her Instagram stories and wrote about feeling that the “end was coming” and therefore, she wanted to “channel...anguish and rage”.

Creator Rafe Judkins also posted a statement on his Instagram and wrote that he didn’t know why The Wheel of Time was cancelled. He stated that he wished he could give a “clear and tidy” answer to the fans but unfortunately, he cannot.
