Referring to It: Welcome to Derry as a love letter to author Stephen King's lore would be an understatement. From the heartfelt reimagination and expansion of the author's mythology to the subtle references, some of which have still gone unnoticed, the care is evident throughout the eight-episode season. It is all proof of that effect.

Showrunner Jason Fuchs has himself admitted, in a conversation with Deadline, that throughout the show, Stephen King's canon is more often than not referenced. He even went on to reveal that there is a specific reference to another work by King that audiences did not spot at first.

The Stephen King influence is more than visible throughout It: Welcome to Derry. While the show itself is built on King's It franchise, countless little moments throughout the eight-episode season are also references to other works by the author.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, Fuchs revealed that even aspects of the show that appeared to be influenced by genres outside the King canon were inspired by Stephen King's work. In one way or another, they all traced back to a corner of the King universe. He also went on to add that this effort could very well have turned into a grab bag of Stephen King. Instead, the team made a unique and singular effort to make It: Welcome to Derry feel like a corner of the King universe that specifically touched on Derry.

"This was a love letter to Stephen King canon. There are influences from various sci-fi and genre material I’ve imbibed over the many years, but more often than not, the references are King."

He went on to reveal that it has been interesting for them to watch audiences pick out little moments that resonate with them. He added that there are still some moments, and even lines, left that fans have yet to recognize.

"We tried very hard to make it feel uniquely and singularly Stephen King and really to stay within things that in some way touched on Derry."

Fuchs was referring to a specific dialogue from the penultimate episode of It: Welcome to Derry, which has come to be one of the saddest of the season. In the episode, right before the racist supremacist group commits the Black Spot tragedy, they storm into the Black Spot and demand that the people there hand over Hank. They promise to leave them alone if they comply. Their exact line was:

"Give us what we want, and we go away"

Fuchs revealed that this dialogue was a hat tip to the miniseries Storm of the Century, where Andre Linoge made this very specific demand. While this reference may have gone unnoticed by many fans, it is yet another reminder that It: Welcome to Derry is, indeed, "a love letter to Stephen King canon."
