Doctor Who Season 15 episode The Interstellar Song Contest saw the return of the Rani (Archie Punjabi), the Doctor's (Ncuti Gatwa) biggest and oldest foe.

While new fans might not be familiar with the Rani, she is more accustomed to classic Whovians. The Rani was once the Doctor's closest friends; they even grew up together and later joined the Prydonian Academy.

While the Doctor studied to become a Time Lord, the Rani's curiosity got the best of her, and soon, she evolved into the Universe's most wanted villain, conducting twisted experiments on different species. She even appears in two stories involving the Sixth and Seventh Doctors.

Since Punjabi's the Rani was revealed in the latest episode, fans are speculating that she has some connection to Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). These theories emerged after the Rani was seen wearing the same cloak as the woman who left Ruby in The Church on the Ruby Road.

Here is how Millie Gibson addressed this Doctor Who Fan theory.

Doctor Who Season 15 finale: Will the Rani & Ruby Sunday fan theories finally come true?

Since Ruby Sunday's mysterious appearance as the Doctor's companion, Doctor Who fans have been speculating about her origins and backstory.

Doctor Who's Season 14 Christmas Special, The Church on the Ruby Road, saw the Doctor travel back to Christmas Eve 2004. On a snowy night, he encounters a strange and mysterious woman in a cloak who leaves a child (Ruby Sunday) on the church steps. As an emotional doctor sees the baby left behind, the woman walks away.

After the Rani's return in the latest episode, fans have noticed her donning the same cloak as the woman who left Ruby on the church steps in 2004. While Ruby was supposedly re-united with her birth mother, fans are speculating a connection between the Rani and Ruby in Doctor Who.

And looks like these fan theories might have some connection after all, since Millie Gibson addressed them with Radio Times:

"I saw this yesterday, and I was literally like, [the fans] are so clever! I can't say if that will happen, but I can say that everything is linked."

She added:

"Russell has cooked up an incredible finale. I think it has everything that a Whovian would wish for in the Wish World!"

While Millie Gibson was tight-lipped on the Rani and Ruby's connection, fan theories are in abundance and the latest reveal about Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson) and the Rani also supports the theory.

How did the Rani return in Doctor Who Season 15?

While fans had been speculating for a long time, Mrs. Flood, Ruby's mysterious neighbour, was finally revealed to be the Rani in Doctor Who Season 15 Episode 6.

The enigmatic Time Lady and the Doctor's oldest foe, the series two-part finale will see Ruby, Belinda, and the Doctor fight against her.

Seeing Mrs. Flood pop up in every Doctor and Belinda's adventure across space and time made it clear that she is more than meets the eye. The latest episode saw her caught up at the 803rd Intergalactic Song Contest.

While the Doctor manages to save Mrs. Flood and the other attendees from a cold void, her brainstem freezes.

The frozen brainstem should have naturally led to her death; however, her Time Lord physiology saves her. In a shocking moment, Mrs. Flood has a surprise bigeneration and splits into two halves—her current self and the Rani.

The bigeneration makes it clear that Mrs. Flood was harbouring the Rani inside her in Doctor Who all this time and the finale will finally see the Doctor going against her again.

Season 15 episode Wish World will premiere on May 24, 2025.
