Foundation on Apple TV+ is an adaptation of the literary source material written by the science-fiction visionary Isaac Asimov. The debut season of Foundation premiered back in 2021 and this was followed up by the second season rolling out in 2023.

As the upcoming third installment of the Apple TV+ show is all set to drop on July 11 on the streaming platform, here we take a look at all the major developments that have taken place in the first two seasons so that you may dive into the latest edition with all the narrative backstory.

Here's everything that you need to know.

What happened in the first season of Foundation on Apple TV+?

The debut season of Foundation encompassed hundreds of years in its narrative scope and was broadly based on the first two out of the five short stories that form the first volume of the source material novel. A departure from the original material saw the character of Gaal Dornick assuming a lot of importance, with much of the story being told from his perspective. Mathematician Hari Seldon, who was the creator and propagator of Psychohistory, predicted the fall of the Galactic Empire and also stated that thirty thousand years of darkness could be prevented by setting up an Encyclopedia Galactica.

On the other hand, the first season of Foundation also sees Seldon laying down his life at the hands of Raych Foss on the way to Terminus. Gaal Dornick was rendered in cryosleep for more than three decades. An unexpected revelation soon hinted that Seldon might have orchestrated his own death and that Gaal and Raych have a daughter by the name of Salvor Hardin. This also explained the reason why Hardin was repeatedly having visions of Gaal and Raych.

In other news, the Vault was the place which contained Hari Seldon's consciousness alongside being copied and uploaded to his ship. Soon enough, the real intention of the Foundation was discovered and explained to be a measure to curate people and form a parallel government system.

What happened in season 2?

The second season of the Apple TV+ show presented more twists and turns, with Seldon and the first iteration surviving the previous attempts on their lives. Gaal and Salvor tried their best to revive the latter's ship, Beggar, on the ocean planet Synnax. They eventually end up escaping the Radiant but must face Hari inside the ship. Empire, on the other hand, steps in to prevent the rising tide against its authority.

Towards the end of the second season, the narrative jumped a remarkable one hundred and fifty-two years forward in the future when Gaal Dornick experienced a vision of a future where the Mule, a powerful mutant with mentalic abilities, was responsible for a devastating attack on the Foundation, killing Salvor Hardin and targeting Dornick herself. When it dawns on her that she might have caused the creation of the Mule, Dornick is terrified and the elasticity of time on the show was further illustrated by this story arc. Salvor dies taking a shot that was meant for Gaal and dies at the hands of a mentallic still under the spell of Tellem.
