Season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix is under production and will be the last season of the live-action remake of the original animated series. With fresh characters, new locations, and production modifications, the last season is looking to be a big one.
Many actors have been added to the cast to play iconic characters from the original series. The filming has also been extended to new locations, and a new director will take over part of the season. The series is tracking the Book 3: Fire storyline from the animated series, where Aang and his friends battle the Fire Nation in their last endeavor to bring balance.
Production will reportedly conclude in late 2025, with release expected in 2026. The last season will resume following the conclusion of season 2, carrying on the story with both beloved characters and new versions. With all this in motion, fans should look forward to a loyal but potentially updated rendition of Aang's conclusion.
New cast members and characters
A few new cast members have been announced for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3, portraying major characters from the original and some who could be new to the adaptation. Miya Cech will play Toph Beifong, a main character introduced in Book 2 of the animated series.
Other new cast members are Chin Han as Long Feng, Hoa Xuande as Professor Zei, Justin Chien as King Kuei, Amanda Zhou as Joo Dee, Crystal Yu as Lady Beifong, Terry Chen as Jeong Jeong, Dolly de Leon as Lo and Li, Dichen Lachman as Avatar Yangchen, Lourdes Faberes as General Sung, and Rekha Sharma as Amita.
For Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 in particular, Jon Jon Briones will play Piandao, while Hama has been cast as Tantoo Cardinal. Actor Adam Beach has been officially cast as Hakoda; the casting information matched against a character of a stern but emotionally troubled leader.
Several other characters have appeared in casting announcements under temporary names. They include:
- Carlos / Hakoda: Portrayed by Adam Beach, who is said to be a tough leader more devoted to duty than family.
- Kenji: Presumably Piandao, said to be a rogue philosopher and competent fighter.
- Ohta: An old, wise, and agile mentor, perhaps an original or borrowed character.
- Yuto: A one-off character, said to be a sadistic military officer.
- Professor Shun: A young, mischievous professor, possibly inspired by Professor Shaw of Ba Sing Se University.
These characters could introduce new views or extended storylines to the original animated series.
Filming locations and schedule
Production on Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 commenced shortly after season 2 finished in March 2025. Although the majority of the series is filmed in Vancouver, some scenes for the third season were shot in Iceland from May 25 through June 24, 2025, reports Knight Edge Media.
Iceland's landscapes are important to utilize. There are more than 100 volcanoes in Iceland, and the landscape can be employed to represent parts of the Fire Nation, which is consistent with the fire theme of Book 3: Fire. One sequence that could have been shot there is Sokka's training with Piandao, although this has not been verified.
Production will wrap up by November 7, 2025, under the working title "DINER BEAR."
Directors of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3

Two directors have been formally announced for season 3. Jabbar Raisani is back, having directed several episodes earlier. Rachel Goldberg is the new director. She has worked on some major series in the past, like Agatha All Along, Gen V, Resident Evil, and Raising Dion.
Their shared experience can shape the tone and rhythm of the last episodes. Goldberg's addition indicates potential new creative paths, particularly for major character stories and conflicts.
Writing team and showrunner
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 will be overseen by showrunner Christine Boylan. The writing team will consist of recurring writers from seasons one and two: Keely MacDonald, Gabriel Llanas, Helen Shang, Teresa Huang, Phinneas Kiyomura, and Emily Kim.
Having recurring writers provides continuity and consistency in the way characters and storylines are developed throughout the series.
Release timeline
There is no release date confirmed as of yet for season 2 or season 3. Reports do indicate, however, that season 2 could land in early 2026. As the third season is already being shot immediately after, it is bound to follow soon after season 2. This would mean that Netflix could have the whole Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series done by the end of 2026.
