After an intense Season 1 finale, Landman fans have been waiting for news on what’s next. While a release date for Landman Season 2 has not been announced, new details about the storyline and character arcs have now been revealed. Series co-creator and executive producer Christian Wallace recently shared new insights, shedding light on how the show will evolve in its second season.

According to Wallace, Tommy’s new role as CEO of MTex Oil will not entirely shift him away from the oil fields. There are also updates about the character Cooper, who is attempting to establish his own oil company, and his intricate relationship with Ariana. Meanwhile, the death of Monty in the finale and the arrival of Gallino are expected to influence the new season significantly.

Billy Bob Thornton, who plays Tommy, has also confirmed that his character won’t change completely. He said,

"Tommy is never going to get the landman out of him. I mean, that’s who he is. He does not want to be an executive guy. I don’t think he wants to be in the suit, but I believe he’ll do whatever it takes."

This gives a clear indication of where Season 2 might be headed.

Tommy’s role as CEO won’t change everything

In Season 1, viewers saw Tommy spending most of his time on the ground, working with the oil crews. With his new role as head of MTex Oil, it might seem like he would step away from fieldwork. But Christian Wallace clarified that this will not be the case.

"Well, the thing about Tommy is: He likes the guys," Wallace told TVLine.
"He likes being involved in the day-to-day operations, at least to an extent." He added, "There are some days that I think he wishes he could never look at another pumpjack again. But it’s also part of what’s in his blood and what drives him to get up every day."

Wallace said that Tommy will need to adjust to more formal settings.

"In this new role, he clearly will have to spend more time in boardrooms and at fancy dinners," he said. "I think you can take Tommy out of the patch to an extent, but not fully."

The Cooper and Ariana relationship remains uncertain

One of the major emotional threads from Season 1 was the growing connection between Cooper, Tommy’s son, and Ariana, the widow of one of Tommy’s crew members. Their storyline left many wondering if the relationship would continue in Landman Season 2.

Wallace said,

"That level of ambivalence, it’s not ambivalence due to lack of emotion or connection." He added, "It’s just, their circumstances are so fraught. There’s obviously a deep love and a deep connection there, for how short of a time these two have known each other."

However, he also noted that their future is unclear.

"Whether or not they can last, whether or not they can grow beyond those circumstances is still to be seen."

Cooper’s Oil Startup faces new challenges in Landman Season 2

Another important storyline in Landman Season 2 will be Cooper’s attempt to build his own oil company. According to Wallace, Cooper’s efforts are being noticed, but he still faces significant obstacles.

"Cooper’s honesty, his straight-shooting, his knowledge of the industry — especially for how young he is — that’s paying him dividends right now," Wallace told TVLine.
"If there’s anything Landman teaches you, it’s that it’s hard out there in the old patch, and so no doubt, there will be some serious challenges thrown Cooper’s way."

He also suggested that tensions may arise between Cooper and the company his father leads. Wallace said,

“It’s always cutthroat in the world of oil and gas exploration."

He explained how, in his own experience working in the oil field, people were always watching what the competition was doing.

As for Cooper’s methods, Wallace said,

"What Cooper is doing right now, he’s just kind of going door-to-door and looking for these small, little parcels of land, these small leases that even a company the size of MTex — which is a smaller independent compared to the BPs, Exxons, Chevrons of the world — they’re more of a mid-tier, and so they’re not worried about what he’s doing. Yet."

Landman Season 2 does not yet have a release date, but new developments suggest major shifts for Tommy, Cooper, and the rest of the characters. As Wallace said, the world of oil remains unpredictable. Fans can expect a continuation of personal and professional challenges.
