Netflix's Extraction universe is growing with a new spin-off television series. Deadline reports that Boyd Holbrook, whose most famous role is the Corinthian in The Sandman, has joined the cast in a starring role. The new eight-episode thriller picks up where the 2020 film Extraction and its 2023 sequel left off.
The show will be a high-stakes rescue mission in Libya. The story revolves around a mercenary, Omar Sy, who is commissioned to rescue hostages from a hostile situation. Holbrook is to star as David Ibby, leader of the extraction team, and is directly involved in planning and conducting the operation.
His leadership role as a character puts him right in the middle of the action, handling both the strategy and survival of his crew in a region dominated by other factions and armed groups.
Glen Mazzara, who worked on The Walking Dead, is producing the show, while the Russo brothers' AGBO production company is also on board. The signing of Boyd Holbrook ties the new series to Netflix's lineup of proven stars, following his successful run on The Sandman. Production is set to fit in with Netflix's overall strategy to expand Extraction into a multi-format action franchise.
His role in Extraction Spin-Off
Boyd Holbrook will play David Ibby, the leader of the extraction team in the new series. As the figure at the heart of the mission, Ibby will be in charge of planning operations and delivering key decisions under intense pressure. The plot puts him working alongside Omar Sy's mercenary character, with both enduring hostile environments and volatile enemies.
The Libyan mission is explained by Netflix as being comprised of several factions with competing interests that provide a setting for dramatic confrontations and perilous negotiations. Holbrook's work will involve him in tactical maneuvers, combat missions, and cooperation with the ground team.
Ibby's inclusion is crucial to the composition of the mission because he serves both as a strategist and a frontline member. The franchise will be intended to continue the high-octane action sequences that have characterized the Extraction movies while bringing in new characters that broaden the franchise's storytelling.
The addition of Holbrook brings a leadership element to the team-oriented plot, providing a contrasting view to the solo-centric storytelling of the original movies.
