It was an unexpected surprise when the first episode of Eyes of Wakanda, an animated spin-off from Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, premiered its first episode at a panel at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, taking us right back to Wakanda, the longest-lived and the most advanced nation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Into the Lion's Den" is a 30-minute-long episode and the first of the four that will be released for this series.

Director Todd Harris, who was formerly a story artist for both Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, introduced Eyes of Wakanda, as well as the episode, which follows Noni, a disgraced Dora Milaje, now a Wakandan secret agent, as she tries to locate a man who goes by the name of Lion. Noni is voiced by Winnie Harlow, whereas 'Lion' is voiced by Cress Williams.

"Marvel Animation’s new action-adventure series 'Eyes of Wakanda' follows the adventures of brave Wakandan warriors throughout history. In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes must carry-out dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts from the enemies of Wakanda. They are the Hatut Zaraze and this is their story."

Lion also used to be a Wakandan secret agent, much like Noni, but he defected from the position and instead runs a band of pirates and has stolen technology from the Wakandans in an attempt to kickstart his own kingdom. Noni locates Lion and his band of pirates in Crete, pillaging and enslaving a town to their cause. However, much to Noni's chagrin, Lion's crew of pirates is actually made up of fighters from all around the world.

Eyes of Wakanda is a graphic 3D-style animation by the Axis Animation Studio, along with an opening sequence that, according to Harris, is completely hand-drawn by the artists at AKA Studio. This was done to preserve the original spirit of the show's visual roots, owing to the fact that charcoal drawings were the earliest forms of painting. Harris explained to the audience:

"Wakanda is a 3,000-year-old society, They have a very succinct self-identity, and they are preserving that. We get the chance to see the persistence and character of Wakandans. The premise of the show is: What’s the kind of culture that builds the Black Panther? You see this even in their generals, their sergeants, everyday citizens."

The animation of Eyes of Wakanda, according to Harris, will push to the forefront the range of cultures that the Wakandans have interacted with throughout history, as it is a country that has been around for longer than anyone else, for thousands of years.

It will be extremely exciting to witness this history come to life through Harris's animated vision.
