Ehud Yonay's 1983 piece, Top Guns, served as the inspiration for the 1986 movie, and this primarily launched the American action-drama franchise, where Tom Cruise portrays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. As per the show’s unique storyline, he is a talented but disobedient Navy pilot at the heart of the narrative.

The original film was hailed for its groundbreaking images and memorable soundtrack, and it became a cultural sensation. 36 years later, in 2022, the franchise continued with Top Gun: Maverick. In this, Maverick trains a new generation of pilots. This primarily includes the son of his late best buddy, and with widespread praise, the sequel was even more successful than the first.

Top Gun 3 is now officially in development. Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Maverick, and the film is all set to be directed by Joseph Kosinski. While aerial combat remains key, the story will emphasize character development. Its filming may commence in 2026, with a release date of 2027-2028, as per ScreenRant.

According to Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, Tom Cruise will play Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun 3, and this next film will have a more ambitious and emotionally charged storyline. He further added,

"I think we've found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we're proposing, but the idea itself of the story we're telling. We're thinking much bigger than… It's a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it's much bigger than himself."

Ehren Kruger is most known for his work on F1 and is writing the film's script, and Kosinski stated that the development process included meetings with the United States Navy and Lockheed Martin to assure realism.

This majorly implies that the film will uphold the franchise's heritage of spectacular aerial sequences. He did, however, highlight that the emotional struggles Maverick faces will be at the center of the plot.

Producer Christopher McQuarrie stated that the essential foundation for the story has already been established, and this unique plot was not difficult to unravel.

He further went on to say that, while the action sequences will remain a significant draw, it is the emotional depth of Maverick's journey that makes the brand resonate with fans.

This is consistent with the success of Top Gun: Maverick. It was hailed for combining high-flying action with very human stakes, and this was particularly true in moments featuring Val Kilmer's Iceman.

Kosinski emphasized that the team would not proceed unless they were satisfied with the strength of the tale. This was decided even though filming is not anticipated to start until late 2026, with a projected release in 2027 or 2028.

Joseph Kosinski, an American filmmaker, is well-known for his directorial roles in films. These majorly include Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Only the Brave (2017), Tron: Legacy (2010), and Oblivion (2013). Prior to transitioning into feature films, he began his career in computer graphics, working on commercials.
