Amazon's Fallout Season 2 is almost on the horizon with its December release, and ahead of the new season's release, loose threads from the previous season are being discussed yet again. The biggest loose thread or unanswered question in the video game adaptation is the mystery around Lee Moldaver and how she managed to survive the nuclear apocalypse and live for 200 years after it.

This loose thread has led to a lot of theorizing for fans, one of the biggest explanations being that she is a synth. This theory could be an explanation of Moldaver's survival despite the apocalypse but would also bring in a host of questions for the lore as well.

Keep reading to find out more.

Could Lee Moldaver be a synth in Fallout Season 2

The Prime Video adaptation of the post-apocalyptic video game franchise takes place in two different timelines. The first one is flashbacks into 2077, before the War even began, and the second timeline is the present, 219 years later in the year 2296. Among the major survivors of the Great War were Walton Goggins's Cooper Howard, Kyle McLachlan's Hank MacLean, and Sarita Choudhury's Lee Moldaver.

While it is explained that Hank entered a cryogenic sleep, whereas Cooper turned into a ghoul after being hit with a lot of radiation, there is no such explanation for the former nuclear scientist, Lee Moldaver. Neither does she appear to be a ghoul, nor is the possibility that she survived through a cryogenic sleep believable. So, the question arises for Fallout Season 2, how did she survive?

It was previously revealed that, despite Moldaver's death in the first season, she would continue to appear in Fallout Season 2. Therefore, her presence might mean that her survival will be explained further in the second season. In a conversation with Nerdist, Sarita Choudhary herself did not specifically answer the question but instead chose a cop-out reply, saying:

I can’t, but I like your predictions, and you can figure stuff out, I think. But again, it’s in line with the fact that she’s a scientist. The fact that she created cold fusion makes me think she can figure out how to live.

Some fans have even come up with the theory that Moldaver is a synth. Synths are synthetic humanoids that were built by the Institute, and the newer models are almost physically the same as humans, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. A Redditor commented on a thread discussing Moldaver that:

"My hot take. The original human is long dead. She is a synth based off the original personality brought back by some force specifically to antagonize Vault Tech."

This theory, while explaining Moldaver's survival through no aging, does bring up a host of questions for the lore of Fallout Season 2. The Prime Video show has yet to introduce synths in its lore, so revealing that Moldaver was one would bring a host of other questions.

Bringing in Moldaver as a synth would force Fallout Season 2 to answer a host of different questions about the Institute, which is in Boston, so only time will tell if such a theory has any legs to stand on in the show's franchise.
