Fallout star Ella Purnell’s British dark comedy series Sweetpea, which originally went a little unnoticed when it was first released, has recently found its way back to the charts. It seems fans are finally discovering the underrated dark comedy, and it is on time, too, as there is a huge production update for its second season.
Sweetpea, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, was released in 2024. Even though it kind of flew under the radar compared to the positive reviews it received from critics, the show was renewed for its second season in December 2024.
The official logline for the show reads:
"Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression - people walk past her without a second glance. That is until she is pushed over the edge and loses control. Rhiannon’s life transforms, but can she keep her killer secret?"

Ella Purnell has great news about Sweetpea Season 2 after its resurgence on the charts
Ella Purnell’s Sweetpea was released in 2024 to fairly positive reviews from critics but went unnoticed with audiences. However, the recent success of the video game adaptation Fallout contributed to a second life for the British dark comedy, and it rose to the top 10 series for the network Starz.

The series’ reception on its release led to a renewal for the second season in December 2024. While there had been no updates for the second season ahead of some casting announcements, Purnell recently revealed in a conversation with Deadline that filming for Sweetpea Season 2 had actually wrapped up. She also shared that the first season would appear quite tame compared to how crazy the second season is turning out to be.
"I’m exhausted, and it was worth it. It was a really crazy season. Season 1 was quite very small and tame in comparison to how bonkers this season is. There’s so much in it. It’s big."
Purnell’s Fallout Season 2 is set to premiere on December 17 as well, so it appears that the actress jumped onto the Starz show very soon after filming for the Prime Video show.
Based on CJ Skuse’s ongoing series (which now has five books), the show stars Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis, who, apart from being subjected to massive bullying in school, now lives an extremely mundane life. She works a mundane job where she goes by unnoticed. However, all of this changes when her father dies suddenly, uprooting her life. Pairing that with some other unfortunate events in her life, Rhiannon finds a simple solution to her problems in life: killing the source of them.
Purnell’s performance in the show has been subject to some critical acclaim, with the Rotten Tomatoes critic score aggregator rating it with a strong 88%. She is joined by the likes of Jon Pointing, Leah Harvey, Rish Shah (Overcompensating), and Tamsin Greig for the second season. However, the audience reception didn’t fall in line with this, as it sits comparatively low at 62% with extremely diverse reviews.
Nevertheless, Purnell’s comments do mean that Sweetpea Season 2 can be expected soon, considering filming has already wrapped up.
