Families Like Ours, a Danish mini-series that initially premiered in October 2024 on Denmark's TV 2 came to Netflix on June 10, 2025. Consisting of 7 episodes, the official synopsis of the show as per Rotten Tomatoes reads:
“As Denmark faces total evacuation due to rising water levels, high school student Laura must choose between her divorced parents and the boy she is in love with.”
As Laura makes the migratory journey, the central question of Families Like Ours focuses on whether she will be reunited with Elias, the one she loves. After all the struggles they both endure, by the end of the show, the young lovers reunite.

Set during a tumultuous period of rising water levels in Denmark, Families Like Ours follows Jacob and his family as he decides to move as per the order of the government. The decision proves to be especially difficult for Laura, as she realizes that has to follow one of her divorced parents while also trying to make sure that she does not lose Elias, with whom she found love in the middle of the ongoing fiasco.
Prompted by Elias’ drawing that shows Laura crossing the river to be with her father while her mother is left behind, she decides that she should be with Fanny, her mother, who is being relocated to Bucharest, Romania under government supervision.
However, Laura’s plans are met with a series of unfortunate events as she is forced to take an illegal ferry after missing her boat. The ferry drops her off in Russia from where she goes to Poland on foot. This causes her to remain disconnected from her family for three days which deeply worries her father, Jacob. He even risks his job to seek help from the police.
Laura manages to make the journey safely and also gets in touch with Elias, the young couple decides to meet at Stegna from where they would go to Bucharest. Elias starts a daunting journey through Poland to reach Stegna. However, as he tries to cover the distance on foot and without having a valid passport, the police take him and torture him as an immigrant.
This leads to Elias’ disappearance which deeply disturbs Laura. His mother also informs her that he might actually be dead since his clothes were found washed up on a shore. Laura, though heartbroken, refuses to accept the possibility of Elias’ death. She even texts him and confesses her love for him, hoping that she would get a response.
Laura’s persistence and faith in her love finally pays off as after many difficult days, she gets a reply from Elias around Christmas. He tells her that the abuse from the police had landed him in a coma and he had to be admitted to a rehabilitation center in Poland. He also tells her that he is still there and is struggling to walk or sleep properly due to the trauma he endured.
As Elias confesses everything to her, they both realize that their lives have changed a lot. However, what has remained constant is their love for each other. Despite the bleak premise of the show and the fact that all the major characters go through hell in the course of the 7 episodes, the young lovers finally meet at the end after fighting initial moments of doubt, embrace each other in a moment of hard-earned, bittersweet hope.
