The animated American sitcom Family Guy finally bids farewell to one of the fan favourite characters, Ernie the Giant Chicken. Ernie isn't the main character in the show, but he is one of the most iconic recurring figures. He isn't part of the main narrative, but his parodies and gags are something fans always look forward to. However, the show appears to be moving past this character.
This is confirmed in the statement given by the executive producer, Alec Sulkin, when he said that Ernie “has gone the way of all flesh”. Read on to know more about the possibilities of the reappearance of Ernie the giant chicken in the upcoming Season.
Family Guy Season 24: Will Ernie the giant chicken appear in the upcoming Season?
The possibility of seeing Ernie the giant chicken in Family Guy Season 24 is low, as the executive producer himself has given his statement about the chicken likely staying dead.
"I think that the chicken has gone the way of all flesh. Honestly, I feel like we got so many great set pieces out of the giant chicken fighting with Peter that they became hard to top. It’s a lot to ask of our production crew, and we may have just gotten the best out of that character," said Alec Sulkin to TV Line.
This suggests that the creative potential to continue the character with more gags has been exhausted over the years, and therefore, the show is stepping away from it. It was in season 23 that Ernie the chicken was shown being decapitated by Meg after he forced her to choose between him and her father, Peter. His death is meant to be permanent, nas has now been confirmed by the producer.
Earnie's legacy in Family Guy explored

Ernie's first appearance came in season 2 in the same episode where Meg is also introduced. Over the years, his fights with Peter became a running gag in the show, bringing laughter to the audience's faces. The character is often seen parodying some action tropes. After 24 seasons, the makers of the show admitted that they have exhausted most of the gags the character can pull off, while also noting that the fight sequence is costly from a production standpoint, especially when it's all animation. This became the reason behind killing Ernie off for good.
This is how he joins the rare group in Family Guy where a character dies and remains dead. This group also includes Peter's boss, Angela and Stewie's rival Doug, along with Diane Simmons.
For those wondering, killing Ernie isn't going to impact the show's future. The future of Family Guy is secure, and it isn't slowing down. Fox renewed it for four more seasons back in April, ensuring it runs through Season 27.
The show and the character's popularity are such that what the future holds cannot be cemented, even after the EP's statement backing the same.
Family Guy has a history of bringing characters back, though briefly, in flashbacks, dream sequences and metafictional gags, etc. Even Sulkin's statement leaves some room for unexpected things to happen. Maybe not in season 24, but the character might appear in future seasons.
