Octavia Spencer is in a new role, and this time it's on Family Recipe Showdown. She has had a diverse career, starring in a variety of roles, both positive and negative. However, nobody could have imagined seeing her in a culinary reality TV show.
The description on Food Network, Family Recipe Showdown's parent, explains that Octavia is going back to her Southern roots with the show, inviting families to share their multi-generational cooking recipes on television for everyone to see. The series celebrates these secrets and traditions.
The show is filmed in New Orleans, and the winners, at the end, will receive a $10,000 cash prize. The show also has Edgar Chase, along with Octavia, to serve as an expert judge. The viewers can also expect to see a long list of guest judges, such as fan favorite star Reese Witherspoon, as well as Jessica Chastain, among others.
As for Octavia, she sat down with Today for a one-on-one interview and talked about her time on Family Recipe Showdown. Production rolled out a clip of her from the series where she seems to be admiring a food processor, but did not know what it was called, and said that she might have to get one of those.
One of the other judges questioned her if she did not have a food processor in her kitchen, and Octavia replied by saying that she might, but just does not know it yet. Explaining her journey to the cooking show, Octavia said,
"Well, I can't cook. I'm an expert taster. And Reese Witherspoon and her executive, Lauren thought it would be fun for me to host a cooking show. We came up with this idea because you know, we all like being in the kitchen. I like being in the kitchen, not necessarily doing anything in the kitchen."
Family Recipe Showdown star Octavia Spencer explains the reason she has not learn cooking yet
Questioning her further, the host asked why she cannot cook, especially when she is from the south. Explaining to him, Octavia said that she is the sixth in line of seven siblings.
This meant that there were 5 people older than her who already had to cook, and that is why the responsibility never fell upon her shoulders to learn how to cook.
When asked about the one thing that Octavia would want the viewers to take away from Family Recipe Showdown, she said that it is the thought that everyone's fondest memories happen over food. It gives people a chance for people to bond over shared meals and create the best moments with each.
Moving on to the subject of her long and diverse career, she was asked about the best part of her journey. Octavia said that it has to be the "amazing people" she has worked with all these years. She says they have influenced her as an actor and a person.
