FBI: Most Wanted concluded its six-year run with a finale that felt both like a farewell and a celebration.

After the finale, many fans wondered what might have been if Season 7 had been renewed. However, with a renewal not happening, showrunner David Hudgins is shedding some light on what FBI: Most Wanted Season 7 could have looked like – and it only makes the cancellation of the show sting more.

His vision here reveals paths not taken and characters left mid-evolution and we’re here to unpack all of what he’s said.

Remy's retirement wasn't meant to be finale in FBI: Most Wanted

For those fans who watched the finale episode thinking Remy’s retirement meant the end of the journey for Dylan McDermott’s character, then boy you’re mistaken. That wasn’t the plan at all.

David Hudgins confirmed:

“Yes Remy would have returned…”

While the character’s exit at the restaurant with his team felt pretty conclusive, it was originally imagined to be a tiny pause – building up the grounds for one finale ride. Hudgins says;

“The cliffhanger in the season finale would have been a ‘big white whale’ fugitive who gets away – only to be captured in the following season…”

However, regardless of this idea, FBI: Most Wanted Season 7 was cut short even before the writers could actually start brainstorming ideas for the next season. Hudgins said,

“We never got to the point of exploring stories for Season 7 because the cancellation came so early, which gave us time to craft the series finale…”

Regardless of this, there were plans that were already in motion when it came to character development/arcs for the next season. In a ‘what-if?’ scenario, we would have gotten to see Ray’s expanding family and Barnes’ new leadership role being further explored. To this, Hudgins adds,

“After her divorce, the question for Barnes in Season 6 was, “who am I?” …She decided she could never do a desk job; she is happiest when being a cop.”

Hudgins further adds,

“Life goes on for the task force and the characters…”

This puts a whole lot of emphasis on how the show was always meant to grow beyond the closure we just got with the Season 6 finale. FBI: Most Wanted might have ended with hope, but it also hinted at exciting and unfinished stories that will now never be told.

Emotional goodbyes and missed opportunities in FBI: Most Wanted’s final hour

While FBI: Most Wanted gave off a feeling of warmth and closure with its Season 6 finale, the intention was never to bring together everything so neatly as they did. It was the consequences of the early cancellation that hit the show like a brick.

It is due to this that Hudgins made sure that each and every character on the show had their time to shine.

During Remy’s dinner toast, fans go to hear and see heartfelt sendoffs. For instance, when he says to Hana,

“I never had children, but if I ever did, I’d want them to be just like you…”

And then hits the surprise: Barnes would be taking over the team. We catch Remy saying:

“It’s no secret we’ve had our ups and downs, but I think everyone knows exactly who I feel when I say, ladies and gentlemen, the new team leader of New York Fugitive Task Force, Sheryll J. Barnes!”

There were also story/character arcs that were left unexplored. For instance, Nina’s reconciliation with her father. To this Hudgins says,

“Perhaps we would have played out the tension more had the series not ended.”

The finale may have been satisfying on its own, but it wasn’t the ending Hudgins originally envisioned. He believed FBI: Most Wanted deserved a longer farewell.

With FBI: Most Wanted officially over, fans are left to imagine what Season 7 could have looked like, from a runaway fugitive arc to more in-depth character explorations, David Hudgins’ insights on the cancelled season still prove that the next installment had plenty of stories left to tell.

While closure came for the show much earlier than expected, the emotional finale ensures that the show won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
