The opening scene of FBI Season 8 Episode 20 depicts the murder of Susan Granwell, a rich patron, who was found dead in her apartment. We quickly learn that this is actually a murder that occurred as a result of an armed robbery. Lucas Williams broke into her home, where he was confronted with a gun by Susan. He then killed her using a cast-iron skillet during the struggle.

As we follow the case of this FBI Season 8 episode as a homicide investigation, while also studying the events that led up to the confrontation, the review of Susan's finances and personal contacts begins, along with her involvement in a labor dispute with her staff. They also discover a missing $100,000 ring belonging to Susan in connection with union negotiator Jeremy Payton, which provides the first suspect lead.

Early investigation and case expansion

In FBI S8, the group decides to explore both Susan's personal and professional life to figure out how and why she was murdered. They look for evidence that links the case to the ring that was stolen, as well as an argument between some of her employees.

As the case develops, a person outside the victim's personal or professional life who doesn't appear to be involved in the dispute is linked to the investigation.

Lucas Williams identified

In FBI Season 8, the suspect, Lucas Williams, is identified. Evidence obtained points toward him and the circumstances surrounding the burglary and murder scene as initially determined.

Furthermore, it was discovered that he is responsible not only for the death of Granwell but also for a bitcoin scam that had a significant payout for the criminal involved.

Bitcoin phishing scam operation

The scam that had been committed by Lucas is revealed to be a bitcoin phishing scheme in which an estimated $315,000 was illegally transferred to a Bratva-related account.

This further complicates the situation in FBI Season 8 and clearly explains that the money theft was not without some further consequence for Lucas.

Additional crimes revealed

Further into the case in FBI season 8, more crimes committed by Lucas begin to surface, showing that the murder, break-in, and theft lead to his entire family being involved in the conflict that follows.

First, his father is murdered and then his sister Faith is kidnapped as retaliation for the theft from the Bratva.

Organized crime and Bratva connection

In FBI Season 8, the crime is connected to the Bratva because the money stolen was in an account that is tied to the Bratva. But it is made clear that it is not some head like Andrei Ovechkin that is ordering the kidnapping, but is in fact the younger members trying to make a name for themselves within the organization.

It's this difference in FBI Season 8 that clarifies the retaliation and increased intensity of the violence. The organized crime link serves to add background information on the threats leveled against Lucas and his family.

Motive and family pressure

In FBI Season 8, there seems to be a mix of factors pushing Lucas to act this way: his family members are struggling and possibly being financially devastated due to the loss of his father's work, and he is trying to secure funds to survive and save his sister through the phishing scheme.

He also seems to have his own motive for carrying out this crime: revenge. This act of violence would not only save his sister but also allow him to take retribution against those who have wronged his family.

FBI investigation process

The whole case of FBI Season 8, Episode 20 involves a mix of clues that lead from the physical evidence in Susan Granwell's apartment to the trace of the bitcoins, up to the search for the kidnapped Faith. However, there was a breakthrough after some agents managed to establish where Lucas was and what happened to him after the initial crime.

This lead was the result of his doxxing on a specific website that identified him as the criminal and allowed others to track down his location to get Faith, but in return, it also provided a way to find him for another motive.

Jubal's connection and internal complexity

In Episode 20 of FBI Season 8, Jubal is caught up in a situation due to his past relationship with Andrei Ovechkin that is connected to the Bratva. This involvement makes Jubal relevant to the situation.

As he has the required experience, Jubal takes a major role in dealing with the investigation in the parts that have to do with the Bratva, which also makes the case harder and more personal for him.

Case structure and final direction

The end of the case in FBI Season 8 highlights the gradual uncovering of each crime involving Lucas throughout the investigation. The case begins with a single murder found at the crime scene and unfolds into a series of interconnected crimes such as robbery and others.

All crimes in FBI season 8 are linked to each other in a sequence, with a singular person (Lucas) linking them all.

In FBI Season 8, Episode 20: Roleplay, the agents begin to look into the death of Susan Granwell, but quickly discover there is a lot more going on than meets the eye.

What initially seemed like a robbery turns into much more, involving a bitcoin scheme, retribution and threats against a family that the team must do their best to prevent.
