Friends is a gift that keeps on giving. To say that the show has a cult following would be an understatement. The sitcom has seen a level of popularity and success like no other show.
More than two decades after its conclusion, viewers are still attached to the show and binge-watch it whenever they want to have a good laugh. Meanwhile, the star cast is also emotionally attached to the series after all these years.
In 2024, when the show completed 30 years, Jennifer Aniston had an interview with Variety, in which she revealed that she vividly remembers how she celebrated with her co-stars when the first episode of Friends aired on television in 1994. Aniston said:
“I remember the day that it was going to premiere on television, on NBC: Matthew Perry and I were having lunch somewhere, and we knew Lisa was getting her hair colored. So we ran into the hair salon, and I snuck up — she was in the sink.”
She added:
“And I took the nozzle from the guy that was supposed to be doing it and just started washing her hair. It definitely flew out of control, and that was unfortunate. But the excitement we had, it feels like yesterday.”
Jennifer Aniston once talked about how Friends is close to her heart after all these years
Jennifer Aniston shot to fame by playing Rachel Green in Friends, and then there was no looking back. The actress has been a part of several acclaimed projects after the show and is one of the most famous celebrities in the world. But despite all the fame and success, Aniston said the NBC sitcom means a lot to her as it gave her a new family. She said in her interview:
“The fact that it’s had this long, wonderful life and it still means a lot to people is one of the greatest gifts I think all five of us — all six of us — we never could imagine. And we see each other. I talked on FaceTime with Court [Courteney Cox] last night for an hour, and Lisa and the boys, and we just have a really — it’s a family forever.”
For those unaware, Friends told the story of a group of six tight-knit people as they went through major events of their adulthood together, from careers and marriages to parenthood and heartbreak. Meanwhile, they always had each other’s backs.
During the interaction, Aniston also talked about how it was a little easier for the cast to focus on their work and not worry about public scrutiny in the absence of social media and smartphones in the 1990s and early 2000s. She said:
“It was in the ’90s and 2000s, and we had a luxury of there not being social media or the internet, so we were so isolated and protected. You weren’t faced with what people are commenting and ripping you apart or whatever. It was really an innocent time, where we could roam about the world a lot easier.”
Apart from Aniston, the show starred Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, and the late Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the show aired for 10 seasons on NBC between 1994 and 2004.
