Two years after its conclusion on Showtime, fans are still wondering if Matt Bomer's Hawk and Jonathan Bailey's Tim will return in Fellow Travelers Season 2.

Fellow Travelers is Showtime's historical political romance miniseries, which was released in October 2023 and is based on Thomas Mallon's eponymous 2007 novel. The series is set in 1950s Washington and follows Hawkins Fuller and Timothy Laughlin's volatile romance, spanning across the d*ug-fueled disco hedonism, the Lavender scare and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

The show was a hit among the audience, even earning a Peabody Award and three Emmy nominations. Fans are still hopeful about Fellow Travelers Season 2 because Showtime has neither canceled nor renewed the series. Additionally, creator Ron Nyswaner has expressed his desire to continue the show in anthology format.

More on this in our story.

Fellow Travelers Season 2: Can Hawk and Tim return for another chapter?

While fans are still hopeful for Bomer and Bailey's return in Fellow Travelers Season 2, Hawk and Tim's story had a definitive (and tragic) ending in Season 1. Throughout the eight episodes, the series explored Hawk and Tim's turbulent relationship as two closeted gay men in 1950s Washington, D.C. Even though Tim was naive and wanted to spend the rest of his life with Hawk, the latter was well-versed in the ways of the world and understood that their romance was doomed. However, Hawk couldn't help but fall in love with Tim but their relationship eventually ended after Hawk married Lucy.

Since Fellow Travelers extensively used flash forwards to feature Hawk and Tim's rocky relationship, the viewers learn about Tim's disease in Episode 3. The third chapter takes the viewers to the 1980s, where Hawk discovers that Tim has been diagnosed with Kaposi Sarcoma & PCP, subsidiary diseases related to HIV/AIDS. Guilt takes over Hawk and he spends Tim's final days with him. Season 1 ended with Hawk finally confessing his true feelings about Tim to his daughter, Kimberly, during the display of the first AIDS Memorial Quilt in 1987.

While the ending was both wholesome and heartbreaking, it leaves little to no room for Hawk and Tim to return in Fellow Travelers Season 2. Considering that Bailey's character dies in the end, it is quite unlikely that Hawk and Tim's love story will continue in another season.

However, since the fans and critics praised Bomer and Bailey's chemistry in Season 1, the show could invest in another season with the actors. Fellow Travelers Season 2 could fill in on the latter years of Hawk and Tim's lives, which were left unexplored in the first season. Since the AIDS crisis was an important theme, it would be fascinating for the viewers to see Tim's journey as he navigated his AIDS diagnosis.

Fellow Travelers Season 2 could return with a new couple

Since Season 1 saw a definitive ending to Hawk and Tim's story, Bomer and Bailey's return is quite unlikely. However, seasoned fans should not lose hope as the series can return with Season 2 with a new couple.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Ron Nyswaner revealed his desire to convert Fellow Travelers into an anthology series:

''I think that there are many stories to be told, and Robbie and I have spoken in detail.''

In another interview with Gay Times, he added:

“I loved making Fellow Travelers, it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life. If I can continue, in some way, that’s a conversation to be had with the people who will be financing that.”

Since Thomas Mallon's book has already become a popular and widely-celebrated title, Fellow Travelers Season 2 can certainly materialize on-screen. Nyswaner's comments suggest that he is interested in exploring more LGBTQ+ stories and the anthology format seems like a promising direction for the show. The creator also added:

''Even maybe taking one or two of the characters from this season who weren’t [featured] as prominently as Hawk and Tim.”

While Nyswaner did not name-drop any characters, Marcus (Jelani Alladin) and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) are the perfect candidates for Fellow Travelers Season 2.

Season 1 saw Marcus and Frankie meet and start a decades-long relationship like Hawk and Tim, which stood the test of time and the AIDs crisis. After Tim and Hawk, Marcus and Frankie were also a fan-favorite couple from the show and they seem to be the perfect subjects for the second chapter.

While fans wait for positive news on Fellow Travelers Season 2, they can binge-watch the freshman season on Paramount+ Showtime.
