Canadian actor François Arnaud, who plays Scott Hunter in Heated Rivalry, HBO Max's sensational queer hockey romance based on Rachel Reid's Game Changers, has broken his silence on the historic moment in Episode 5 titled “I’ll Believe in Anything”.

After two years of confusion, secrecy, and contemplation, Scott Hunter, the Captain of the New York Admirals, finally came out and accepted his relationship with Kip (Robbie G.K.) publicly. In an interview with Glamour, Arnaud breaks down Skip's (Scott+Kip) kiss in Heated Rivalry Episode 5 and how it paved the way for protagonists, Shane (Hudson Williams) and Ilya (Connor Storrie):

''It felt so earned and deserved and kind of a cataclysmic moment, hopefully, for television and in the context of that sport. I could feel the shock wave of that, if it happened in real life, you know?''

Check out Arnaud's comments in our story.

The final moments of Heated Rivalry Episode 5 are the titular game changers (from Reid's fictional hockey universe) in Shane and Ilya's story. While Shane and Ilya navigated the changing terms in their casual 'fling' and contemplated the consequences of embracing their sexuality (and each other) while being star hockey players, Scott Hunter made a bold move that instilled the couple with hope.

The fifth episode saw Scott Hunter lifting the MLH cup for New York Admorals, a historic win after 27 years, witnessed by Shane and Ilya on national television. While the couple was distracted by their constant texting, Scott's suspicious behaviour on the ice grabs their attention back to the television. In a bold move, Scott invites Kip onto the ice, who was enjoying his boyfriend's win with Elena and his father, from afar. Taking his hand, Scott confesses his feelings to his partner and publicly kisses him on the ice, creating history by becoming the first openly gay hockey player.

This moment in Heated Rivalry Episode 5 not only charmed the fans but also Arnaud, who had 'goosebumps' after watching Skip's kiss on-screen, as he told Glamour:

''Seeing it with the crowd added in and the VFX is so epic. I’m not one to be particularly moved by watching myself on screen normally, but watching that, I was having goosebumps.''

The moment was also a callback to the 'sunshine' scene from Heated Rivalry Episode 3, where Elena subtly warns Scott when she says, 'he deserves sunshine and so do you.' Making good on Elena's advice and threat, Scott finally gifts 'sunshine' to Kip and accepts him publicly on the ring after winning the MLH cup, while “I’ll Believe in Anything” (the title of Episode 5) by Wolf Parade plays in the background.

Arnaud was particularly taken aback by the mention of 'sunshine' in the song's lyrics, as he added:

''The mention of “sunshine,” which was Elena’s sort of forceful tip at the end of three, yeah, it made me really emotional.''

While the historic moment was a personal win for Skip, it also gave hope to Shane and Ilya, motivating the latter to accept Shane's invitation to the cottage. Breaking down the importance of Skip's kiss for Shane and Ilya, Arnaud added:

“It allowed him to keep Ilya and Shane more tentative in their dynamic. That’s how he felt about the end of five as well. They sort of live their own emotional climax vicariously through Scott.”

It's no wonder Heated Rivalry Episode 5 is garnering attention on social media. “I’ll Believe in Anything” became one of the highest-rated episodes on IMDb (10/10) with over 5000 fan ratings, only behind an episode of Breaking Bad with more input from the audience. Fans are calling Heated Rivalry Episode 5 as one of the best hours of television, praising Williams and Storrie's perfect portrayal of their respective characters.

The Heated Rivalry finale titled 'The Cottage' will release on HBO Max on December 26.
