Only Murders In The Building is officially returning for a sixth season, and for the first time, our favorite true crime podcasters are moving out of their high-end NYC building to head to London.

While fans are excited to see the new setting of the series, viewers are also wondering why the creator chose London as the location. Series co-creator John Hoffman has now talked about the decision in an interview with Variety.

The showrunner revealed that London is the land of legendary mystery novel writers like Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. The team thought that bringing Mabel, Charles, and Oliver to that place would lead to a thrilling narrative in Only Murders In The Building Season 6. Hoffman said:

“Fiction-meets-true crime storytelling and podcasting became really intriguing to me, to mix those two worlds. It’s [London is] ]the land of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, combined with our podcasters and what they’ve been successful with. Marrying those things in the place where the cozy murder mystery began felt really intriguing.”

John Hoffman further explained how Only Murders In The Building Season 5 has delved deeply into the trio’s connection to the Arconia building and to New York City as a whole. That is why the creators felt that they needed to bring a fresh energy into the series with a different setting.

At the end of Season 5, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver listened to Cinda’s new London-based podcast. She is the same podcaster who inspired the three to start investigating murders in the first place. Hence, the upcoming season and its London setting are going to be a fresh start for the trio:

“Season 5 really brought it home: The meaning of that building and their home and New York itself was very much explored in this season, so [we had] this idea that of taking it back to an origin story with Cinda being what brought them all together. Their fandom of her and her podcast was how it all started. And then taking it to [London], the origin of mystery writing.”

Hoffman also talked about whether Only Murders In The Building Season 6 would mark the end of the series. He revealed that as long as the cast agrees to be on the series, and as long as Disney allows them to make the show, they will continue with it:

“The only way I look at the ending of this series is when we’re genuinely out of turns that take us into deeper territory. If [Disney says], “Enough is enough! Get out of here,” and, or if, our cast is done — I think we’re all gaming this and seeing how embraced we remain. I think we all want to be conscious about when the ending is, and whether that’s a situation that ends in London or ends in New York, is another question. So we’ll see.”

Only Murders In The Building is one of the few streaming shows that has followed a yearly release schedule without any breaks since its inception in 2021. The Hulu mystery comedy drama revolves around three true-crime podcast lovers who investigate murders at their luxurious residential building.

Only Murders In The Building Seasons 1 to 5 are streaming on Hulu.
