Many people shy away from the topic of prenups, but Kevin O'Leary, the Shark Tank investor, is not one of them. Opening up several times on his Instagram about his views on a prenuptial agreement before marriage, Kevin highlighted how important that document is.
It is a contract that many couples might fear discussing, as it might damage the romance. However, Kevin says it is not only a smart move but also a necessary one.
Recently sharing on his social media, the Shark Tank investor also revealed his brand new venture called Hello Prenups. It is safe to say that Kevin is putting his money where his mouth is because he is one of the founding shareholders of this project. This platform helps couples craft an affordable, legally binding prenup without hiring expensive attorneys.
Expressing his opinion, he said,
"Should you get a prenup before you get married? There's only one answer. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. Why? It helps you do financial due diligence on your potential spouse or significant other. It may be a little uncomfortable in the beginning, but it's so important because 50% of marriages fail, and you wanna have some kind of agreement on what happens to the money."
Continuing, he talked about his platform and said,
"Now, I believe in this so much that I am the founding shareholders of helloprenup.com. So if you're a woman, you're getting married, check out Hello Prenup. It's all about the prenup, baby. It makes you fall even more in love."
Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary shares why he thinks prenups are a good idea
Kevin O'Leary, the Shark Tank investor, in a video he uploaded back in February this year, revealed a harsh truth. He said that more than 50% of marriages fail, and it is not because of cheating or loss of love, but due to financial stress.
His reasoning is simple. Kevin says that when the love fades and the pressure builds, what remains is money, property, and the shared liabilities. This contract helps in laying out a clear, pre-agreed roadmap if a separation does occur. It is all about due diligence, which is important in business, as well as marriage.
The Shark Tank investor also highlights that prenups might breed conflict or be uncomfortable in the beginning. Still, it ultimately forces the couple to have those tough financial conversations that many avoid until it is too late. He said,
"Yes. I love, love. Believe me. L'amour whoa whoa whoa, but after a few years, poo-poo happens, and half of marriages end in separation. Not because of infidelity, but because of financial stress. And when the love is gone, what's left? The cash. And if you have an agreement, it's easy to make that decoupling happen."
According to Kevin, marriage is just as important a concept as a business and thus, should be treated as an equal partnership and approached with clarity.
Shark Tank season 16 episodes are available to stream online via Hulu.
