First look of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter revealed as filming begins

Harry Potter, the HBO series, began filming on 14th July 2025. The show will be adapting the Harry Potter novel series by J.K. Rowling. As it is already evident, the show aims to tell the complete story of the Chosen One, his adventures at Hogwarts, and the eventual Battle of Hogwarts, which marked the death of Voldemort.

As HBO announced this development, the platform also revealed the first look of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. While viewers are used to seeing Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, the series is going to follow McLaughlin as Harry as the young wizard begins his journey at Hogwarts.

First look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter

Dominic McLaughlin is an eleven-year-old Scottish actor who is the exact age Harry was when he got enrolled in Hogwarts. Besides, as the books state, every witch or wizard gets their welcome letter at the age of eleven. Thus, he has been a perfect casting and fits the role of Harry physically as well. This is further proven by the first-look picture of McLaughlin as Harry posted by HBO.

Other than Harry Potter, McLaughlin has also worked in the film Grow by Sky and the BBC series Gifted, which is yet to be released. He has also performed in the Royal Highland Centre production of Macbeth.

Other than McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. These three young actors will be playing the famous trio, who not only became renowned witches and wizards of the wizarding world but also defeated a dark lord, who had been a threat for decades.

It all started when a young baby wizard, Harry, lost his parents, James and Lily Potter, in an attack by Voldemort. Voldemort was a powerful dark wizard at the height of his power, who was told that a boy born at the end of July would be the one to defeat him. Scared that the prophecy would come true, he aimed to kill any and every wizard born at the mentioned time.

While he was successful at killing James and Lily, Harry survived, having only a scar on his forehead. When Voldemort tried to kill baby Harry, Lily's love protected him and rebounded his killing curse, hitting Voldemort instead. Thus, for years after that day, Voldemort was bodyless, only his soul surviving.

The show will show us how young Harry, who was raised by his maternal aunt Petunia Dursley and her family, enrolls at Hogwarts, learns about his parents, and becomes the Chosen One and defeats Voldemort. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, and the series will be directed by Mark Mylod.

Other than the three main protagonists, John Lithgow will be playing Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu will be playing Severus Snape, Janet McTeer will be playing Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost will be playing Rubeus Hagrid. Other cast members include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge.

More cast members include Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, and Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan. Additionally, Rory Wilmot will be playing Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson will be playing Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey will star as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser will be playing Garrick Ollivander.

Harry Potter, the HBO series, will be released in 2027.
