Variety has released an exclusive first look at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 - Lost in New Jersey.
Kent Seki, director of the short film, spoke about the film with Variety, saying,
“We wanted to honor the Ninja Turtles’ history while asking what would happen if we put them somewhere completely unfamiliar,”
He continued,
“New Jersey became the perfect backdrop because it’s so close to New York, yet has its own energy and quirks that challenge the turtles in new ways.”
Despite being a new project, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 - Lost in New Jersey will hold on to the charm of the Ninja Turtles films from the 90s while being exciting for the newer generations. One can expect the usual adventure, comedic style, and action that are signature to the franchise. Seki further described the upcoming film, saying,
“I grew up loving both ‘Home Alone’ and the Ninja Turtles, and this project became a way to smash those influences together,"
He continued,
“The turtles are constantly in survival mode — but here, survival means figuring out the Jersey Turnpike.”
Besides, this time, both the animation and the setting of the film are going to be different from the earlier ones in the franchise. Instead of being set in New York, the story is set in New Jersey, which is why the change. Seki wanted this change so he could bring something new and unexpected to the viewers. He further spoke about it, saying,
“Whenever you work with characters as iconic as the turtles, you have to give fans the personalities they love — Leonardo’s discipline, Michelangelo’s humor, Donatello’s tech obsession, Raphael’s temper — but then ask, ‘How do we surprise people?’ For me, the surprise came from the setting and the way we used the animation style to heighten those contrasts.”
Talking about the animation, Seki said,
“It was about making the turtles pop against an environment that feels almost too real, so every pizza slice and sewer lid becomes a character in its own right.”
The short film is produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Jeff Rowe, and Ramsay McBean. Point Grey Pictures has produced the film, while Paramount Pictures is distributing it.
