The first look images of the upcoming Sky drama Under Salt Marsh have been revealed, and the new show will star Yellowstone alumna Kelly Reilly as Jackie Ellis, a former detective whose past resurfaces in devastating ways. In Yellowstone, Riley starred as Beth Dutton, John Dutton's only daughter. At the end of the show, Beth and her husband Rip left the Dutton Ranch to start a new life at a smaller ranch with their adopted son, Carter, in Montana.
Riley isn't the only protagonist of the show. Rafe Spall, best known for Trying and The War of the Worlds, plays Detective Eric Bull. The show takes place in the fictional Welsh coastal town of Morfa Halen, marking Reilly’s return to television after Yellowstone ended in 2024.
Under Salt Marsh: first look, story and cast
Under Salt Marsh is a Sky Original crime series set in Wales, which will have six parts. The drama follows Jackie Ellis, who used to be a detective but is now a teacher trying to rebuild her life. But a discovery threatens to pull her back into the darkest moment from her past.
The first-look images give us a hint of what the show would be like. In one, Reilly and Spall stand on a bleak shoreline, while another shows Jackie standing alone in the rain, setting a heavy emotional tone.
The official synopsis of the show, according to Sky, states,
Former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis (Reilly) makes a shocking discovery that reopens the wounds of a three-year-old cold case which cost her both her career and her family’s trust.
Forced to reunite with her estranged police partner Eric Bull (Spall), Jackie is drawn back into an investigation that will shake Morfa Halen to its core. Together, they must confront a community haunted by secrets and fractured by grief, before the incoming storm washes away the evidence forever.
For many viewers, it will be hard not to compare Jackie Ellis with Beth Dutton, the character that made Reilly extremely popular in the U.S. Beth was sharp-tongued, fearless, unapologetic, and unforgiving. She was a ruthless businesswoman who was tough and made sure anyone who crossed her paid the price. Jackie, on the other hand, appears to be shaped by loss and regret and is grieving. She is nothing like Beth, and Under Salt Marsh will allow Reilly to explore a character starkly different from her last, and allow fans to see Reilly in a role they haven't before.
Under Salt Marsh also stars Naomi Yang, Jonathan Pryce, Dinita Gohil, Brian Gleeson, Kimberley Nixon, and Harry Lawtey. The show is created and written by Claire Oakley, who has also directed the show. It is produced by Little Door Productions and Sky Studios. The producers on the show are Scott Bassett and Emma Duffy. Under Salt Marsh is executive produced by Elwen Rowlands, Megan Spanjian, Claire Oakley, and Kelly Reilly.
Under Salt Marsh will be released on Sky in 2026.
