Paul Bettany is set to reappear as White Vision in the highly anticipated Marvel Disney+ Vision Quest series that will be released in 2026.
The series was introduced with a first trailer during New York Comic Con 2025, with Bettany reprising his Vision character but reassembled. Footage also hinted at appearances by legendary Marvel AI icons like Ultron, Jarvis, and Friday, as well as the grown-up Tommy Maximoff, Vision, and Wanda's son.
Vision Quest is positioned as the final installment in a trilogy that was started with WandaVision (2021) and continued with Agatha All Along (2024), concluding a storyline that is rooted in Vision's tumultuous existence and legacy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Created by Terry Matalas, the creator of Star Trek: Picard, Vision Quest is built upon the unique storyline of White Vision, a variation on Vision that regained the memories of the previous Vision but cannot connect with them on an emotional basis. The series will explore White Vision as he seeks to reunite his fractured personality.
What is interesting is that the series also sees a return of James Spader to his role of Ultron, the creator of Vision, making a threatening force of AI come back to this new story. Human portrayals of artificial intelligence systems developed by Tony Stark, Jarvis, Friday, and Edith are also presented as characters.
Detailed exploration of the Vision Quest series
Vision Quest is a primary MCU Disney+ miniseries by Marvel Studios, with Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision. The eight-episode series will premiere in late 2026 and is a spin-off show WandaVision.
Terry Matalas, the showrunner, has completely restructured the series plot to focus on the enigmatic White Vision, a variant defined by his white synthetic appearance and existential mission to retrieve his former emotions and memories imparted to him by the original Vision. This iteration is torn by identity crises while he coexists with his memories without the corresponding human emotions, developing a narrative of self-recovery and discovery that Marvel buffs have been wanting to witness for a long time.
The show uniquely reunites several AI MCU characters in human form, Jarvis, Friday, and Edith, symbolizing Tony Stark's technological inheritance, developing a sophisticated AI-human dichotomy. The return of Ultron creates tension, considering his past role as a genocidal AI villain and Vision's creator.
The storyline directly relates to WandaVision's climactic events, wherein Vision's memories were imprinted on White Vision, creating continuity and depth. The trailer depicts White Vision walking up to a classy white mansion governed by AI servants, signifying a literal and metaphoric homecoming into Stark's world of AIs.
Notably, the appearance of Tommy Maximoff as an adult is a harbinger for future familial plots with possibly increased magical and technological stakes in the series.
Paul Bettany's involvement and James Spader's recasting as Ultron tie the series directly to the MCU's growing mythology. Talking to ScreenRant about Vision Quest, Bettany stated:
“I think it's so it's, it's, for sure, reminiscent and part of that, that trilogy, but it's also very much. It's got its own DNA.”
Speaking at the NYCC 2025, Bettany was quoted as saying by What’s On Disney Plus:
“White Vision’s journey during the show is about his attempt to connect to those memories and who he was… but with lasers!”
What is Vision Quest about?
Vision Quest storyline follows as a continuation of the events of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, offering a conclusion to the developing Vision saga in the MCU Disney+ universe.
WandaVision concluded with a White Vision that was rehabilitated and rebuilt, not with the original emotional center that Vision had been defined by. The show addresses White Vision explicitly in struggling to come to peace between the shared memories of the original Vision, even the memories that existed in the Hex world Wanda had created, and his own mechanical and cold nature.
Vision Quest will see this internal and external conflict play out with White Vision attempting to reclaim his humanity, memory, and identity as he fights against the inheritance of his creation and his creators, including Ultron. The storyline is enhanced by support characters that are AI programs, Jarvis, Friday, and Edith, who highlight the technological origin of Vision.
The introduction of Tommy Maximoff, Vision and Wanda's son, now grown up, allows for both new familial relationships and potential obstacles. The White Vision and Tommy's relationship is hinted at as being complex, with clear overt emotional and storytelling gravity to their relationship.
The participation of James Spader's Ultron in human form gives the series a sense of danger and depth, as Ultron was initially designed to kill humans but became an enemy of Vision. This situation gives birth to philosophical arguments about AI autonomy, human emotion, identity, and creation that Vision Quest is reportedly going to address.
