The 5-part documentary takes a look at the critically acclaimed filmmaking career of over six decades through interviews with Scorsese's creative collaborators, his family, friends, and finally, Scorsese himself.
Apple TV+ has released a first look at the documentary, which reveals a never-heard-before clip of Scorsese reflecting upon the lengths he was willing to go to save his cut of Taxi Driver.
First-look at the Apple TV+ documentary Mr. Scorsese reveals the filmmaker's passion and dedication to his art
Apple TV+ has unveiled a first look at the 5-part documentary, directed by Rebecca Miller, which:
"examines how Scorsese’s colorful life experiences informed his artistic vision as each film he made stunned the world with originality. Starting with his earliest experiences (New York University student films) through to the present day, this documentary explores the themes that have fascinated Scorsese, including the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind"

The sneak peek at the documentary revealed a mythic story about Taxi Driver, one of the greatest films in American history, where Scorsese was willing to cross all limits to save his cut of the film.
He revealed that the studio was asking him to cut some of the scenes from the movie, which, according to them, were too violent. Scorsese reveals in the short clip that he was so angry that they were "destroying" his version of the film that he wanted to get a gun and shoot something:
"I was angry. I said I was going to threaten them … I’ll maybe just shoot or something. I had no idea. I mean, I was just threatening. What I wanted to do, and not with a gun, I would go in, find out where the rough cut is, and break the windows and take it away"
Scorsese reveals in the sneak peek at Mr. Scorsese that even though he wouldn't have gotten the gun, he did want to find out where the rough copy of the film was and to destroy it himself, just to prevent the studio from doing so by cutting the pivotal scenes from it:
"They were going to destroy the film anyway, you know. So let me destroy it. I’ll destroy it. But before destroying it, I’m going to steal it."
Thankfully, however, it did not come to this, and the world got to witness the work of art that Taxi Driver is, as someone came up with the simple solution of toning down the bloody scenes in the film to make the blood look more brown than red. This simple, creative solution, as revealed by Mr. Scorsese, mollified the Motion Picture Association of America and thankfully prevented Scorsese from getting a gun to 'shoot or something.'
This tale, although humorous, is just another testament to Scorsese's dedication and passion for his art.
