Foundation, the sci-fi series that premiered on Apple TV+ in September 2021, is based on Isaac Asimov’s book series, which tells the story of a galaxy-spanning empire on the edge of collapse. Created by David S. Goyer, the show brings Asimov’s huge and complex world to life in a way never seen before on screen.

The main focus of Foundation comes from a concept called “psychohistory,” invented by Hari Seldon. This is a type of math that can predict large-scale events in the future. Seldon foresees the fall of the Galactic Empire and wants to shorten the chaos that follows. To do this, he sets up a group called the Foundation to protect knowledge and guide the galaxy toward a better future.

Season 1 shows the early moves of this long-term plan. The battle begins between the Empire and those working in secret to create something new. The finale reveals the truth about Hari Seldon's plan and just how far he was willing to go to make it work.

How does Foundation Season 1 end?

For most of the first season, a strange object called the Vault sits on the planet Terminus. In the final episode, it finally opens. Inside is a version of Hari Seldon, an artificial copy of his mind. This digital version appears during the moment of crisis and gives guidance, just as Seldon predicted years before. His message changes everything. The Foundation wasn’t just about saving books and ideas; it was about creating a new society, one that could one day take the Empire’s place.

The ending focuses on a conflict between two outer-rim colonies: the Anacreons and the Thespis. These groups have hated each other for generations. The Anacreons discover an ancient Imperial warship called the Invictus and plan to use it. They force scientists from the Foundation to help fix the ship. As tensions rise, the Thespis arrive to stop them, bringing both sides to the edge of war.

Hari’s AI steps in just in time. He reveals that the Empire had actually caused the feud between the two colonies. Now, they must come together with the Foundation to form a new alliance. These three groups can work together without the Empire watching.

To make sure the Empire doesn’t interfere, the Invictus is used to simulate the destruction of the local star. The Empire, already occupied with Seldon's other plans and the latest destruction, will not come near. This trick gives the Foundation and its new allies freedom to grow and prepare for the future.

While the Foundation rises, the Empire is falling into crisis. The ruling leaders are clones of a man named Cleon I, copied for generations to keep the empire stable. But now, someone has secretly changed the DNA of the clones. New Emperors are not exact copies anymore. This causes fear and conflict within the palace. One of the Emperors is killed by Demerzel, a loyal android who protects the dynasty, even if it has to commit murder.

The season ends with a huge time jump: 138 years into the future. Gaal Dornick wakes up on her ruined home planet, Synnax. There, she finds Salvor Hardin, who turns out to be her daughter. Both women have strange abilities that allow them to sense the future, something even Seldon couldn't do. Their powers could change everything.

Now that Gaal and Salvor are together, the second part of Seldon's plan may begin. But their presence also creates problems that his math couldn’t account for. The story of Foundation is just getting started in season one, and you will have to watch season two to know the future of the galaxy.

Seasons one and two of Foundation are streaming on Apple TV+, and season three arrives on 11th July 2025.
