The third season of Foundation ended with Demerzel and Brother Day losing their lives at the hands of Brother Dusk, leaving the fate of the Empire at his mercy. That's a bleak note this Apple series will potentially lead with in its fourth season. It's not the first time something tragic has happened in the show, which has always been about the gradual collapse of civilization.

Still, Brother Day and Demerzel's loss will leave a hole in the hearts of fans, who have admired either the characters or the performances over the Foundation's run so far. Showrunner David S. Goyer spoke about these shocking deaths during his recent conversation with /Film, where he also addressed why Brother Dusk decided to kill her even after ending her dynasty. Here's his quote:

"The act that actually frees [Demerzel] is Dusk destroying the clone tanks, because once the clone tanks and that baby are dead, there’s no genetic dynasty anymore. There’s nothing to protect. So the irony is she would also have been free there, but Dusk doesn’t believe, once she’s free, that she would be on his side, necessarily. So he comes up with this idea to both destroy her and the clone tanks."

Goyer also spoke about the gradual shift in Brother Day's arc over this season of Foundation, saying:

"I just like that tragic irony of Day changing as a character and becoming selfless and Demerzel being free, but the moment she’s free is also the moment that she dies."

Demerzel's death in Foundation may leave Brother Dusk unprepared for some dangers lurking behind the scenes

Demerzel's tragic fate by the end of Foundation season 3 paves the way for Brother Dusk to rule. He could have achieved something similar simply by destroying the clone. It had already freed Demerzel from her loyalty to the dynasty, meaning she didn't need to be burdened by the same share of responsibilities that hitherto affected her existence.

Brother Dusk could have used that sense of freedom to his advantage, but instead, he killed her since he couldn't trust her with what was at stake for him at large. It led her life to a poignant finale where she lost nearly everything that held her life together. Shortly after, Brother Day also died a similarly wretched death.

Lee Pace, who played Brother Day with a suave charm, has been one of the show's highlights. That's why his death stings just as much as Demerzel's. As David S. Goyer points out, there's another reason why his departure feels just as tragic. He had a transformative arc throughout the show's run, where he learned to be selfless, only to be left to die shortly after her death.

Since the show's beginning, Hari Seldon has pointed out the fall of the civilization in 500 years, which means Brother Dusk is the person likely heading in that direction. While he has the Prime Radiant, he may not have someone like Demerzel, who could help him with a looming crisis inflicted by the robots in the galaxy.
