Now that Frank Darabont has stepped out of retirement to direct two episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, he is sharing insights into his experience working on the acclaimed sci-fi series. While the celebrated filmmaker behind projects like The Green Mile, The Walking Dead and The Shawshank Redemption retired back in 2013, he was drawn back by the atmospheric universe crafted by the Duffer Brothers and agreed to direct two episodes in the final season.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, the veteran filmmaker revealed how he and his wife binge-watched the first four seasons of the acclaimed sci-fi hit and were already fans of the Upside Down when the Duffer Brothers presented him with this opportunity. After some consideration, Darabont hopped on the Upside Down and directed two episodes in Stranger Things Season 5.

The filmmaker described his experience with the Stranger Things cast and crew as:

''[It] was a special opportunity for me to be a small part of a very large, wonderful thing that so many people love. I’m grateful to the Duffers for that opportunity. It will always be a great memory working with them and that cast and crew.''

More on this in our story.

Frank Darabont directed episodes 3 and 5 of Stranger Things Season 5

While The Shawshank Redemption director retired in 2013 after his last project, the 2013 Mob City episode “Red Light,” he came out of retirement to direct two episodes of the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi saga. The Stranger Things duo were fans of Darabont's works. However, after Dan Trachtenberg (one of the directors on Stranger Things Season 5) backed out due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming film Predator: Badlands, it created the perfect opportunity for the Duffer Brothers to reel in their favorite director to direct two episodes of the final season.

Frank Darabont directed Episode 3 titled 'The Turnbow Trap' and Episode 5 titled 'Shock Jock' in Stranger Things Season 5. Episode 3 was one of the most action-packed and intense hours in Volume 1, as the Hawkins gang united to save Derek Turnbow and his family from the evil clutches of Vecna. While the world witnessed Darabont in action in Episode 3, his final directorial gig will kick-start Volume 2 of the final season, scheduled to release on Christmas.

While Darabont was naturally tight-lipped about the plot, he teased some details about the upcoming episode with Variety. Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 will likely explore Henry Creel/Vecna's story, who made his shocking entry only in the final moments of Volume 1. Darabont revealed:

''I think in Episode 5 you’re gonna get some really cool stuff with Henry...we’re kind of heading into his story more. It was a great thrill to do. We have a lot of good acting and good scenes that you can look forward to.''

After Stranger Things Season 5, Frank Darabont is open to more creative projects in the future

Now that Frank Darabont left the comfort of his retirement to direct two episodes of the Duffer Brothers sci-fi saga, fans of his work will certainly want him attached to more projects in the future. The director revealed he 'loves being retired' but is open to creative projects, as long as they interest him, like Stranger Things Season 5.

Darabont revealed:

''If you have a good situation like that and it can be about the creative process, then its a pleasure. So my longwinded answer winds up being, it depends. If there’s a friendly situation and I’m excited enough about the material, then it’s certainly a possibility. I’m not ruling anything out, but it would have to be something special.''

Catch Darabont's directorial gig with the Duffer Brothers in Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 on Netflix on Christmas. The finale will drop on December 31.
